Gallbladder Mucocele: Miya’s fight to survive!/March 16, 2020

Miya & her first bed in 2011 (1 yr old).
The bed that started it all.

The second week of February was a very traumatic week for us as we almost lost our baby Miya who is also the inspiration behind our custom dog beds. While many people have issues with Gallbladders it’s not as common in dogs, which in turn makes it not very well-known. It can be fatal and strike at any moment! We write this in an effort to get the word out about gallbladder issues in dogs, specifically mucocele’s in dogs as this struck too close to home and almost took our little baby from us!

About Gallbladder Mucocele:

Mucocele is caused when the gallbladder lining secretes abnormally thick mucus which then accumulates and becomes thicker and thicker to the point it obstructs the normal flow of bile from the gallbladder to the small intestines. When this happens, the gallbladder may rupture due to the over-distention of this sludge. (Source: AKC)

It’s most commonly seen in older small-to-medium size dogs that are around 10 years old. The breeds it most commonly affects are Shetland Sheepdogs, Miniature Schnauzers, Cocker Spaniels, Pomeranians (what Miya is), and Chihuahuas. (Source: MSPCA & AKC) If caught early, the survival rate is approximately 98% versus 80% who are clinically sick like Miya. (Source: NCBI) So, in other words, we wish this would have been discovered sooner so the surgery could have been performed before she got so sick which resulted in an even riskier surgery and longer recovery.

Symptoms include Vomiting, Lethargy, Appetite Loss, Jaundice, Abdominal Pain, Diarrhea, and Fever. (Source: VeterinaryPartner) Miya went from displaying no signs to all-of-a-sudden displaying all of these symptoms within a day, except for the tender abdomen and fever. Jaundice didn’t show up until the day after the vet admitted her.

Miya’s Story:
The day started out as any normal day would. Miya appeared to be her normal self and ate all of her food the night before. When we returned home from our errands she was all excited to see us jumping and barking. But when I went to feed her shortly after that she would not eat her favorite food. Once in a long while she would do that so it didn’t alarm me to much. The next day she still wouldn’t eat and now she wouldn’t even eat her favorite treats. She was still drinking water and I was able to get her to eat some lunch meat but she later threw up. I decided to take her to the vet first thing the next morning. When I woke up Monday morning I found bloody diarrhea on our sheets and immediately rushed her to the vet without an appointment before they were open. At this point, Miya didn’t want to move and was very lethargic.

Wednesday 2/12 – just before arriving at the new vet for a diagnosis. She looks ok after supportive care, but she was still very sick!

Our vet got us in quickly and agreed she was very sick. They admitted her so they could run some blood tests and get her hooked up on IV’s. The blood test showed some things were out of range but nothing really stood out other than her being very hypoglycemic and dehydrated from not eating. By Wednesday (2 days later) she was starting to perk up under their supportive care but according to her blood work her liver enzymes, Bilirubin, and white blood cell count were now all way up and she was also now anemic. So while she felt and looked better, it would only be temporary as we still didn’t have a diagnosis. The vet mentioned Pancreatitis, Insolonoma, or liver damage (all very serious) but that she really needed to have an ultrasound done which they didn’t have. So we picked her up and took her to another vet who had the equipment. The new vet took some more blood work Wednesday afternoon and her numbers were continuing to climb more out of range. The new vet mentioned her liver was most likely being blocked and that it could be caused by her gallbladder being blocked (the other vet never even mentioned that as a possibility). So they took her back for an ultrasound and sure enough she said her gallbladder looked to be full of something called Mucocele. She said that because it wasn’t ruptured they’d have the surgeon verify in the morning and would proceed with removing her gallbladder if it was indeed the case.

Without her gallbladder removed Miya would have most certainly passed away but with it removed she could live a normal life. Statistics for surviving the postoperative period was approximately 80% (20% chance she could still pass away). That was terrifying but we knew we had no choice. The next morning they confirmed via ultrasound that it appeared to be Gallbladder Mucocele and that they would be proceeding with the gallbladder removal surgery (cholecystectomy).

Tuesday 2/18 – Day after discharge from hospital

Shortly after the surgery we got a call she made it through and did great! We were so relieved but knew she still had a long recovery as her gallbladder also caused liver inflammation/damage which the vet noted so she also took a biopsy of her liver when she was opened up as well. Two days after the surgery she was still anemic and her liver enzymes & bilirubin hadn’t dropped much if at all and her white blood cell had increased. So they said that she needed more time to heal and couldn’t be released yet. So Monday came and we were so anxious and hopeful to learn that her numbers were decreasing and were starting to go in the normal direction. We got the call we were hoping for that her anemia was greatly improving! Her liver enzymes and bilirubin were still a bit elevated but going down and that it may take time as she needed to be on liver medicine and would need to be for the rest of her life. But, finally, one week after we first took her to the vet, we were finally able to take our little baby home!

At the time of writing this blog post (one month later), she is doing great and appears to be back to her normal self. Her liver enzymes are still slightly out of normal range but they are getting closer to normal, so she is improving. The first two weeks after gallbladder surgery are the most critical and she made it through and is doing great. We are so happy to have a local experienced vet who identified the problem right away and could perform the surgery to save her life.

We hope this blog post can help spread the word to other dog owners in order to possibly save their pet’s life if they could experience a gallbladder mucocele at some point in their life. If you have one of the breeds listed above, please talk to your vet about the best time to get an ultrasound done of your pet’s gallbladder in hopes of catching it before it becomes life-threatening.

Praising the Pawsitive: 3 Ways to Encourage Good Doggy Behavior/April 24, 2019

We know every dog is a good boy or a good girl! Some pups just need a bit of encouragement. From chewing to zoomies, there’s no behavior that a little patience, love, and care can’t fix. Consider these 3 ways to encourage good doggy behavior. The answer to “who’s a good boy?” might be closer than you think!

Keep It Fun

Much like busy toddlers, it’s easy for dogs to lose interest in obedience training. Dull exercises can feel like a chore for both you and your canine companion. Mix up the mundane by incorporating play into manners!

Instead of using treats, encourage your dog’s good behavior by using his or her favorite toys. Many owners tend to overload on snacks during obedience training. This can quickly add extra fluff to your best friend’s physique! Active play promotes health, exercise, and bonding. Have dogs sit before tossing the ball. Use a squeaky toy to teach your dog to roll over. Make playtime a teachable moment by having your dog bring you his or her toys, “leave it” when asked, and respond to your voice.

New puppy? Playtime is the perfect time to get to know your new friend. Not only will your pup learn important social skills, but playtime is a great opportunity to teach appropriate rough housing skills. Puppies learn to test out their bite strength on toys. When pups get too mouthy, it’s important to redirect and correct this behavior by immediately withdrawing your attention. Remove the toy if your furbaby is becoming too aggressive and ignore them (we know, this hurts all parents!). Once your pup has calmed down, return to playtime. This will teach your dog to associate good behaviors with positive reinforcement.

Get into a playtime routine! Your dog will look forward to their favorite part of the day. Best of all, this is a great way to eliminate boredom chewing by establishing a set time for rough housing.

Treat and Repeat

Patience is key when it comes to obedience training. Even the smartest dogs require consistency and repetition. This does not mean yelling your dog’s name over and over again to the groans of everyone else at the dog park, however! Avoid repeating verbal commands more than twice. Instead, give your dog a hand signal to associate with the command. Continue this practice and be prepared to maintain and refresh throughout the entirety of your dog’s life. Even old dogs can learn new tricks!

For new dogs or those still learning the basics, set aside 20 minutes per day for dedicated obedience time. This practice is helpful for even the most well behaved pups. Not only is reinforcement critical, but adding new commands to your dog’s repertoire is a great way to keep their brains active and their curiosity stimulated.

Creating Calm

Every dog needs a calm, safe space when it’s time to wind down. Many puppies and dogs benefit from crate training. It’s important not to misunderstand the methodology behind crate training. Your pup’s crate should NEVER be used as punishment. Rather, crate training mimics a dog’s natural instinct to retreat to his or her den. Your little pup needs a designated place to relax!

This does not mean your dog needs to revert completely to the state of its wild ancestors. J’adore understands that even dogs with the heart of a wolf deserve to be pampered. Make your dog’s crate or kennel comfortable with our custom bone pillow and luxurious, easy-to-clean blankets. Familiar scents will give your best friend a sense of comfort and security.

Looking to add a more personal touch to your pet’s mini suite? Design your own custom dog bed for the good boy or girl in your life!

The Importance of Properly Identifying Your Pet: National Pet ID Week is April 14/April 16, 2019

Fluffy and Fido are more than just your pets, they are members of your family. The thought that your pet may become lost is unimaginable. Yet, it happens more often than you might think. It is estimated that 1 out of 3 pets will become separated from their owners at some point. Hopefully, your pet never becomes the 1 in 3, but you should take precautions in the event that the unthinkable happens. The best way to ensure the safe recovery and return of your dog or cat is proper identification.

Why Should You ID Your Pet?

Pet identification is one of the most important ways you can protect your pet. Should you ID your pet, even if he or she is an indoor cat or an indoor dog who only goes out on a leash? Yes, yes, yes! Every single pet should have some type of identification. Even indoor dogs and cats are prone to escaping under the right circumstances. A door accidentally left open, a pet notorious for slipping past someone coming in the door, or even Fido slipping his collar on a walk are all very common occurrences that lead to pets not being able to find their way home.

Different Types of Pet Identification

Collar Tags

Collar tags are the most widely recognized form of identification for both cats and dogs. Have your pet’s tag engraved with his or her name, your name, and phone number at the very least. Besides being able to quickly make contact with the owner, a collar with both a collar tag and a rabies tag, instantly lets people know that Fluffy or Fido belongs to someone, has a family, and is properly vaccinated.

Microchipping

Microchipping as a form of identification is becoming more and more popular among pet owners. The microchip is inserted just underneath the skin and contains all sorts of information including the pet’s name, age, veterinarian, owner’s name, address, and phone number. The average person does not have a scanner that can read microchips. However, most people will take a cat and dog they find to a veterinarian’s office and let them scan the pet for free. From there, the pet will be held safely until the owner can be reached.

Each type of identification has both pros and cons. Both dogs and cats are notorious for slipping collars or they can be removed if your pet is stolen. The average person will not be able to scan your pet for a microchip. The best approach is to combine a collar tag with a microchip.

Protect Your Four-Legged Family Members

Too many pets each year are sadly separated from their families and never reunited. National pet ID week is April 14-20. Protect your furry best friend by ensuring he or she has proper identification and help reduce the number of pets who are lost each year and never recovered due to lack of identification.

Springtime Activities for You and Your Pets/March 26, 2019

Springtime is just around the corner. With it comes the much anticipated warm weather, blue skies, and green grass. You aren’t the only one looking forward to Spring! Your furry friend is looking forward to nicer weather and being able to play outside. There’s no better way to get your dog or cat primed for a nap in their custom pet bed than with a nice outing.

How can you and your best friend enjoy the beautiful spring weather together? Let’s take a look at the best springtime activities to enjoy with your dog or cat.

The Best Springtime Activities for Dogs

No matter you or your dog’s interests, there is something for everyone. Let’s take a look at the best activities to enjoy with your beloved pup this spring.

Take a Hike

Take your furry friend on a hike. You will enjoy the exercise and beautiful views while your best friend enjoys exploring new territory with new smells, and of course his best friend! Be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks for you both!

Catch a Frisbee

Grab a frisbee or a ball and hit your backyard or even the nearby park for a game of fetch. You will both enjoy the fresh spring air and both you and your best friend will get a workout that leaves you ready for a nap!

Get Your Jog on!

An exciting jog around your neighborhood will definitely put your pup in the mood for a nice long afternoon nap. If you want to mix things up, you can find a local park or a nice wooded jogging trail to explore.

Visit the Dog Park

Dog parks are a great way to allow your best friend to not only get out pent up energy but to socialize. He can meet and play with new friends while you make new friends of your own as well.

The Best Springtime Activities for Cats

While cats are known for lounging on the back of the sofa or their custom pet bed, there are still plenty of activities you can engage in with your cat that will leave them begging for a nap.

A Breath of Fresh Air

If you think only dogs enjoy walks, think again! Many cats enjoy a nice walk outdoors in the fresh air. If you choose to brave it outside with your cat, be sure to do so safely. Unlike dogs, cats do not take well to a leash attached to their collar. Instead, invest in the proper size harness. It will not only be more comfortable for your cat, but more secure as well.

Birdwatching Session

Most cats are mesmerized by birds and can watch them for hours. Choose a room in the house that offers a great opportunity for your furry friend to perch on a piece of furniture and catch a great view out of the window. Place a bird feeder within view of the window and let your feline enjoy a bird watching session followed by a long nap. Elevate your cat’s experience by opening the windows. Just make sure the screens are still in!

Engage in Mobile Apps

There are plenty of mobile apps available for your cat to interact with. The two of you can sit on the screened in porch while your feline friend chases lasers or small critters on your screen. After a session of active play, your cat will be more than happy to take a long nap.

Springtime not only brings with it great weather, but new opportunities to spend time with your beloved friend. These activities will not let your pet get out much-needed energy from the long winter months but are sure to leave you and your pets with lasting memories!

It’s Pet Poison Prevent Week: Find Out What Can Be Dangerous for Your Pets/March 19, 2019

Pet poison prevention week begins on March 17, and there’s no better time to discuss this important and scary subject. Many people don’t realize the dangers of certain foods, plants, and other common household objects to pets. Sadly, many of the things your pet can ingest in your home or yard can cause serious illness or even death. Prevention of this catastrophe begins with knowledge. Learn which items pose a threat to the health of your cat or dog and the symptoms that signal pet poisoning.

Poisonous Plants

There are many indoor and outdoor plants that are dangerous to both cats and dogs. While you may think that your pet has no interest in eating plants, they may gnaw on woody trunks or swallow nuts. Even the pollen from certain plants can be dangerous. Some of the plants most commonly found in homes and yards that are toxic for pets include lilies, sago palms, ivy, azaleas, tomato plants, and aloe vera.

Lilies, English ivy, and aloe vera are all common houseplants. Lilies aren’t dangerous for dogs but some species cause serious symptoms in cats. Ingestion of the plant or pollen can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and kidney failure. Aloe vera is a medicinal plant that soothes human skin problems. When your cat or dog ingests the sap, the results may include diarrhea, vomiting, tremors, and mental reactions. English ivy is often grown indoors in pots or outside to trail over fences and walls. The effects of this plant on your cat or dog may include vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and hypersalivation.

Sago palms, tomato plants, and azaleas are commonly found in lawns. Sago palms are grown indoors and outdoors. They are extremely poisonous to both cats and dogs. If your pet ingests any part of this plant, symptoms may include vomiting, bloody feces, coma, and seizures. Azaleas are flowering shrubs that are toxic to pets. Ingestion can cause weakness, blindness, and cardiac failure. If you are a pet parent with a green thumb, it is vital to keep dangerous plants away from your pets.

Dangerous Snacks

There are many snacks that are tasty for humans but extremely dangerous for pets. Certain candies are a common reason for pet illnesses. Most people are aware of the dangers of chocolate to pets. However, other dangerous foods are often overlooked.

Xylitol is probably not an ingredient most people are familiar with, but you’ve probably consumed it before. Xylitol is a sweetener found in gum, candy, and baked goods that can be deadly for your dog. Early symptoms include vomiting and lethargy. More serious effects include a blood sugar drop and liver failure. A small amount can cause severe symptoms within 15 to 30 minutes.

Surprisingly, fruits and vegetables can be dangerous to animals as well. Raisins can cause vomiting, lethargy, and lack of urination. Ingestion of raw onions and garlic can result in weakness, anemia, and liver damage.

Human Medications

If they aren’t stored properly, your medications can pose a serious danger for your pets. Many commonly prescribed and over-the-counter medicines make pets seriously ill. There are several medicines on the Pet Poison Helpline top ten poisons list for both cats and dogs.

Antidepressants and stimulant medications prescribed for ADHD are frequently reported in the poisoning of both cats and dogs. This is likely because they are commonly prescribed medicines. Early symptoms of these poisonings include vomiting and diarrhea. Antidepressants may also cause tremors, high body temperatures, and seizures. Even very small amounts of prescription stimulants can cause life-threatening seizures and heart problems in pets.

Commonly reported over-the-counter medicines include anti-inflammatories, acetaminophen (Tylenol), and vitamin D. These are common OTC medications found in many homes. Early symptoms of animal poisoning include abdominal pain and vomiting. More serious dangers of anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) include intestinal ulcers and kidney failure. Acetaminophen is especially dangerous to cats, potentially resulting in damage to red blood cells. It has the same life-threatening effect on dogs when large doses are ingested, and can also cause liver failure.

Prevention is the best medicine when it comes to the dangers of pet poisons. Some poisoning symptoms are irreversible. No matter how quickly you get help, you may not be able to save your furry family member. However, if you suspect your pet has already ingested something poisonous, it is important to contact your veterinarian immediately.

Reasons to Find Your Next Best Friend and Treat Them to a Custom Pet Bed This October/October 11, 2018

Most of us associate October with brisk fall weather, shorter days and the spooky fun of Halloween. But did you know that October is also National Adopt a Dog Month?

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the American Humane Association (AHA) have both established this month as a time to focus on the urgent need for people to adopt shelter dogs and other pets, and on the many reasons why adopting a homeless pet may be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. Here are some more facts about shelter dogs and other pets in the United States, and how you can make a newly adopted pet feel at home with a brand new custom pet bed of their own.

Why Homeless Dogs and Cats Need Our Help

According to the ASPCA, over six million pets wind up in animal shelters across the United States each year, for a variety of reasons. Of these, roughly half of these animals are dogs. While the number of pets entering shelters has declined since 2011, there is no denying the fact that at any given time there are thousands of pets in need of loving homes in every state in the nation.

Many U.S. animal shelters are full to the brink and understaffed, which is why over a million cats and dogs are euthanized annually—a tragedy that many animal rescue organizations agree could be prevented by more people taking the time to ‘adopt, not shop’ for their next four-legged friend. In fact, an overall increase in adoptions in recent years is believed to be at least partially responsible for declining euthanasia rates in shelters across the country. With any luck, this is a trend that will only continue to grow, until all pets have a safe and loving home.

The Benefits of Adopting Pets

Animals just seem to know when they’ve been given a second chance and are now in the safety of a loving home. Withdrawn and seemingly depressed dogs and cats often emerge from their shells and gain confidence with a little patience and loving attention. These before and after photos are amazing evidence of just how much pets seem to blossom after they leave the shelter!

When you adopt a new dog or cat from an animal shelter, you may not realize that the animals aren’t the only ones who benefit. There are also many ways that adopted animals help their owners lead happier, healthier lives too. Your new dog or cat will shower you with unconditional love and affection each day for the rest of his or her life, giving you plenty of reasons to smile. The joys of pet ownership will also help to relieve your stress, encourage you to be more physically active, and could even lower your blood pressure. It’s easy to see why, paws down, adopting a pet is one of life’s greatest win-win situations.

How to Help Your New Pet Feel at Home with a New Custom Pet Bed

Making the transition from a life on the streets or at a shelter to your home is a big change for any adopted pet. Wouldn’t you like to help them feel more comfortable and welcomed? Dogs and cats both appreciate having a place of their own as their personal ‘den’. A custom pet bed from J’adore, like our ever-popular Cuddle Pet Bed or luxurious Throne Pet Bed, is a fantastic way you can help your new furry friend feel right at home. Best of all, you’ll be able to design the way your pet’s bed looks down to the choice of fabric and any extras, including the ability to custom embroider your adopted pal’s name. Accessorize Your Crate or Custom Dog Bed with Fun New Bedding for Your Dogs/August 16, 2018

Happy Dog Customer, Feedsack Grainsack Bed

Dogs, like people, like having a place they can call their own. When you retire to your bedroom at the end of a long day, does your dog have an area they can similarly unwind? If not, you may wish to consider the benefits that come from providing your dog with their own safe space, such as a custom dog bed made just for them or a crate where they can feel secure.

If you decide to provide a crate or a similar area for your dog, it’s important to know what you should and should not put in it. The goal is to let your dog know that the space is for them, and you can do just that by making it seem as enticing and welcoming as possible. Add plenty of toys and comfy bedding, with easy access to food and water at all times. Just be sure not to put in anything that could be easily chewed or shredded by your dog, resulting in a potential choking hazard.

When you provide your dog with their special space, you will be giving them a place where they can relax and feel at ease while they sleep. If you live in an area where it gets cold in the winter, or your dog suffers from arthritis, they could use a little extra support. To help them feel extra comfortable you can add safe bedding like chew-proof blankets that provide both warmth and a little extra padding.

You may already be familiar with our amazing beds, but did you know that J’adore also makes fantastic bed accessories as well? With the help of a new customizable pillow or blanket, you can give your dogs the creature comforts they crave while coordinating perfectly with their existing J’adore custom dog bed or looking great all on their own.

happy dog customer bone pillowOur new bone pillow is a fun and cozy addition for your dog’s bed or crate. Just like with our tailor-made custom pet beds, you can personalize your dog’s pillow with up to three different colorful fabrics of your choice. You can also select between our three available sizes so that your new pillow will perfectly match your dog’s head as he or she lays down after hours of play. Feel free also to add your pet’s name embroidered in the center so that everyone will know just who your dog’s new pillow belongs to.

Other comfy bed or crate accessories to consider are our new extra-plush blankets for dogs. These super-cuddly blankets can also be made to fit your dog’s unique personality, or your home décor, with up to three different fabric choices from our diverse selection for the front or back side or for the band that extends along the edge. We’d love to see what you can come up when you share your design to Facebook, Twitter, or more!

Dogs who love to suck on blankets (it’s a thing!) or fluff them up with their paws before they settle will be able to get lots of use out of our durable bedding, thanks to our use of high-quality, upholstery-grade materials and fabrics. These blankets are so soft you’ll probably look forward to snuggling up to your dog while he’s under one.

Keeping Your Pets Safe on July 4th/June 28, 2018

The fourth of July can be a lot of fun for people, but fireworks, picnics, and parties can all be stressful and even dangerous for pets. If your pet is frightened by noisy fireworks, he may run away in an attempt to escape; some holiday foods may be harmful as well. Traveling and summer heat can be perilous, as can firework debris left lying around that your pet may try to play with or eat. This year, make July 4th fun and safe for everyone involved – even your pets.

Before the Party

Before the celebration begins, make sure your dogs and cats have up-to-date identification tags with your contact information in case they do run off. In addition, it’s a good idea to have your dog or cat microchipped as well. The use of microchips is responsible for returning many lost animals to their worried owners. You should also take a current photo of your pets to have just in case. If you already know that fireworks make your pet anxious, speak with your vet about medication or behavioral therapy to make the holiday less scary. Finally, secure the area well, making sure that all fences and gates are closed or that the doors inside your home are shut to keep your pet confined to a safe area.

During the Celebration

When it’s time to party, take steps to keep your pets safe while you and your family and friends have a blast. First of all, if you’re going to a parade, fireworks display, party, or other gathering, leave your pets at home. Many people think it’s fun to take their pets with them to these types of events, but the noise, crowds, and unfamiliar surroundings can all be frightening, and your pet may get spooked and run away. Leave your pet at home in a safe, comfortable room during parties. Your dog or cat will be much happier snuggled up in their J’adore custom pet bed with a few safe treats. If you are expecting guests, place a note on the door reminding them to leave the room closed off.

If your pet doesn’t need to be kept in a separate room during the party, it’s still essential that you take some steps to keep them safe. Keep all fireworks, sparklers, charcoal, and skewers away from your pet, and don’t allow your pet to go near a hot grill (remember that it may remain hot for a long time after use).

Holidays often include lots of delicious food, but some of it isn’t safe for your pets. Avoid feeding your pets table scraps or foods intended for your human guests. Chocolate, onions, grapes, avocados, and foods containing xylitol are some of the things your pets shouldn’t eat. However, that doesn’t mean your pets can’t enjoy some treats, too – just stick to foods that are good for them such as berries, carrots, cucumber, and lean meats. You can also prepare some treats especially for your pet such as homemade cookies (use a recipe intended for dogs or cats) or frozen peanut butter inside a Kong.

Remember to keep your pets cool; the summer heat can be dangerous for cats and dogs alike. Make sure that they always have access to fresh water and never leave them inside a vehicle when it’s warm out.

Cleanup Time

When the party’s over, check your yard carefully for fireworks, food scraps, and anything else that might tempt a curious pet. Even if you didn’t set off fireworks on your property, neighbors may have, and their debris can make its way into your yard.
With a little preparation and common sense, your pets can have just as much fun this fourth of July as you do – and stay safe, happy, and healthy doing it.

Pet Patriotism Perfectly Possible with a Pre-designed J’adore Patriotic Pet Bed/June 8, 2018

No country celebrates its independence more exuberantly than the United States of America. Do you also start yearning for the 4th of July as soon as spring is at its peak with the sun shining brightly every day, the weather inviting you to go walking with your four-legged friend, and flowers growing in abundance? Perhaps you’re already planning the barbecue for which you’ve invited a record number of visitors, or you’ve got tickets for the ball game safely tucked away. This is the one day of the year where everyone can show that they respect our beautiful country.

Flags, garlands, bumper stickers, and other accessories in our stars & stripes are a prominent part of the 4th of July. Choosing appropriate music is also necessary—so is dressing your family up in clothing that suits the occasion. Include your dog or your cat too; after all, they’re part of the family. Do you think animals don’t understand patriotism? Don’t be too sure about this.

They Also Serve

In 1943, the PDSA Dickin Medal was founded by Mia Dickin, a British social reformer. This medal was initially awarded to honor animals for their bravery in World War II, but even in the 21st-century cats, dogs, horses, and pigeons may still receive it. The medal bears the words “For Gallantry” and “We Also Serve.”

Just like us, our pets deserve a chance to show pride on this special day. Tying a fancy collar, a bandana or bowtie round their neck doesn’t take long and doesn’t make them feel uncomfortable. You can also exchange their food bowl for one with an Old Glory motif.

Don’t Overdo It

Some people insist on putting their canine or feline friends in crazy white, blue, and red costumes. They will even add a little hat to complete the look. While pictures on the internet of the most patriotic pets are fun to look at, not every animal enjoys being treated like a doll. Dogs, especially older ones will allow their human friends such follies, but their own fur still suits them best.

Your pet can be patriotic every day of the year

Consider a J’Adore patriotic pet bed which is available in three styles, and in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL. The fabric is made of the same high-quality material as all our J’Adore pet beds. You can choose to have your pet’s name embroidered on the bed, but longer text is also possible. Let some patriotic mottos from great Americans such as Eleanor Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and even Walt Disney inspire you. If you’re unsure whether the text is too long, ask us.

Appreciating the Day in an Unusual Way

While you may look forward to the parade, consider that some cats or dogs do not necessarily feel the same. Not every animal feels entirely at ease near or in a great crowd, while loud music is playing, especially accompanied by sharp whistles or the thumps of big drums. While you love your dogs, you may want to leave them at home, especially if they’re still relatively young and excitable.

A Stressful Display and a Cozy Hideaway

The firework explosions too can be overly noisy for canine or feline spectators. Many helpful tips exist, some even based on scientific information. Since every pet is different, what works for one does not necessarily work for another. For many four-footed friends, a haven may be all it needs. If your pet is already the lucky owner of a J’Adore pet bed where it can feel at ease, your Fourth of July may be as perfect as you planned it.

Things to Do with Your Dog Over the Memorial Day Holiday/May 24, 2018

As Memorial Day approaches, many people are thinking about how to spend their time off work and enjoy some R&R.  As Memorial Day is set aside to honor those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms, it is only fitting to spend it with our loved ones.  However, that doesn’t mean just our human companions.  Our dogs are members of our families, and they’ll enjoy spending a fun day of celebrating as much as you will.  Here are some fun ways to include them in your holiday plans.

Have a Picnic in the Park

Holidays are all about spending quality time with friends and family, and that includes pups.  This Memorial Day, plan a picnic at a local park where you can barbecue, play games, enjoy cold drinks, and relax on blankets in the shade.  Then take your fun to the next level by including your furry friends.  Tell your friends to bring their dogs, too – they’ll love having a day to socialize as much as people do.

Play Outdoor Games

You don’t have to organize a big soiree to enjoy your day off and give your dog some extra attention.  Get outside with your pup and come up with some exciting new games to play.  Hide treats inside toys designed for this purpose and toss them for your dog.  Or, challenge your dog to a game of fetch with a favorite chew toy or rubber ball.  If you play together at the dog park, other dogs might join in the fun, and you might even make a new friend or two yourself.  Spending your day off playing with your dog is a terrific way to show him how much you care.

Go for a Hike

There’s nothing quite like exploring new territory for your dog.  Find a new trail to hike and let your pooch get lost in all the new sights, sounds, and smells.  Whether you’d like to hit the trails with a few friends or all by yourself, your dog will make the perfect hiking companion.  See if you can find a trail with something unique to offer, such as a spectacular ocean view or a beautiful valley to overlook.  Don’t worry, though – your pooch will be thrilled with even a run-of-the-mill hike.  Enjoying the great outdoors with your pup is a perfect way to celebrate Memorial Day this year.

Whip Up Some Special Treats

Especially if you live in a place where the weather on Memorial Day is already sweltering, staying cool will be necessary for your dog.  Plan for long hours of hot sunshine with treats that not only help your dog remain cool but also taste delicious.  Here’s a great idea: freeze chicken broth in ice cube trays the day before. Put them in your dog’s bowl at the park so that she can lap up the refreshing (and hydrating) broth.  Here are some other helpful tips for keeping your dog comfortable in hot weather.

Celebrate Memorial Day with J’adore

There’s no better way to show your appreciation for your canine pal than with a luxurious, high-quality custom pet bed from J’adore.  A custom dog bed such as our Cuddle, Throne, Round, or Cozy Cuddle is just what your pal needs at the end of a long day of early summer fun.

The Cuddle, our best-selling dog bed, is a stylish and comfortable bed dogs love.  It is reversible to provide multiple unique looks, and you can customize it with up to five different fabrics.  This furniture-quality bed is filled with the best fiberfill – giving it an incredibly soft and snuggly feel while ensuring it outlasts other pet beds.  And don’t worry if your dog comes home from your Memorial Day romp with muddy paws – the Cuddle cover is easy to remove and wash.

When we design dog beds, we focus on comfort, durability, and functionality.  Give your dog the gift of all three to celebrate the beginning of summer with a Cuddle custom pet bed from J’adore.

Why Your Pet Will Love a J’adore Throne Pet Bed/May 10, 2018

Do you treat your pet like royalty? Of course, you do – because that’s how amazing and special our furry friends are. They may drive us crazy sometimes, but they also make us laugh, touch our hearts, and loyally stay by our sides through thick and thin without ever judging us for having a bad hair day, eating too much ice cream, or watching terrible movies that make us ugly-cry. Mostly, our pets make our lives brighter every day, and they deserve to be treated like kings and queens.

Because your pet deserves nothing less than the very best, why not treat them to the very best custom pet bed? Dogs and cats spend a considerable percentage of their time asleep (cats more than dogs, but who’s counting?). At J’adore, we offer the perfect option for the regal pup or kitty in your life: Our Luxury Throne bed. This custom pet bed has all the great features that make a pet bed great.

Throne Features

The Luxury Throne allows you to choose up to four fabrics for a fully customizable experience. This flexibility will enable you to create exactly the look you want so that your pet bed matches your décor, your pet’s personality, or whatever criteria you want to fill when designing the perfect pet bed. We offer tons of varied materials to choose from, and you get to pick your favorite colors and patterns for the silky fur in the middle of the bed, the top bolster, the cording, and the outside fabric.

The Throne’s exceptional construction makes it sturdy, long-lasting, and exquisitely comfortable. Its structured sides help it hold its shape night after night while the soft, “furry” center makes it warm, soft, and the perfect place to curl up for a nap or a long night’s sleep. Your custom pet bed will be stuffed full of fiberfill and ultra-soft fleece for an unbeatably relaxing and soothing place to rest.

Another great thing about the Throne custom pet bed is that the cover is fully washable. Just unzip, remove, and toss into the wash. The zipper runs along all four sides on the bottom of the bed, making removing the cover nearly effortless. If you’ve had a pet bed in the past that didn’t include a washable cover, you know how important this feature is. Don’t worry about shedding, drooling, or muddy paws – just wash the Throne’s cover to restore it to good-as-new condition.

The J’adore Difference

When it comes to your pet, only the best will do. We understand that because we’re pet lovers ourselves. Our pets make our lives so much fuller and happier, and we love treating them to the good things they deserve.

That’s why we design our pet beds with comfort, functionality, and durability in mind. The Throne’s heavy weight shows its quality and amount of filling, while serged seams protect against fraying. Every fabric we offer, from cotton and polyester to cotton/rayon blends and solution-dyed acrylic, is washable to keep your pet bed at its best. We use industrial sewing machines, upholstery-grade zippers, bonded nylon thread, and more to ensure that your pet bed is fit for royalty.

The J’adore Throne is indeed a fantastic piece of furniture your dog or cat will love sleeping in for years to come. It’s especially enjoyable in the colder winter months because of the luxurious “fur” covering in the middle, keeping your dog or cat incredibly warm and cuddly. However, our breathable fabrics and soft, comfortable design make all our beds suitable for year-round use. Make your pet feel like the regal creature they are with a Luxury Throne custom dog bed or custom cat bed from J’adore.

May Is Pet Cancer Awareness Month/May 4, 2018

Nobody wants to hear that their pet has cancer. But because cancer is so much easier to treat when caught early, it’s important to know what to look for and how to proceed should your pet develop troubling symptoms. In honor of Pet Cancer Awareness Month, here is some information for pet owners to help them look after their pet’s health and comfort as well as they can.

Signs to Look For

A cancer diagnosis can be scary, but keep in mind that it’s not a death sentence, especially if discovered early on. Symptoms of cancer in pets are not that different from symptoms in humans. In fact, dog cancers resemble human cancers so closely that researchers are hopeful that what they’re learning can benefit both species. Some early warning signs to be aware of include:

  • Changes in behavior such as becoming unusually withdrawn
  • Limping that doesn’t dissipate after resting
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Bad breath
  • Changes in barking or purring sounds
  • A new lump that grows rapidly or appears suddenly
  • Any unusual swelling
  • A sore that does not heal
  • Difficulty breathing

Should you notice any of these symptoms, be sure to consult your veterinarian as soon as possible. Pets over seven years of age should see their vets twice a year for checkups.

Common Cancers in Dogs

Many dogs will receive a cancer diagnosis during their lifetimes. The good news is that many cancers are treatable if caught early. Some of the most common canine cancers include:

  • Lymphoma, which occurs in the lymph nodes or bone marrow
  • Hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the blood vessels
  • Mast cell tumors, which are found in the skin and other tissues such as the respiratory tract
  • Melanoma, a skin cancer found in the footpads, nail beds, eyes, or mouth
  • Osteosarcoma, a fast-growing cancer of the bone
  • Mammary cancer, most common in unspayed female dogs

Common Cancers in Cats

Just like humans and dogs, cats can develop a variety of cancers. Some of the most common include:

  • Lymphoma
  • Mammary cancer
  • Feline leukemia virus, which attacks the cat’s immune system
  • Squamous cell carcinoma, a skin cancer
  • Fibrosarcoma, an aggressive soft-tissue cancer

Treatment Options

Medical technology has come a long way. Sadly, not every pet’s cancer is treatable. However, an increasing number of dogs and cats are surviving their cancer diagnoses with new, effective treatments. The ultimate goal is always to remove the cancer completely, but when that isn’t possible, there are still often ways to extend your pet’s life and make them more comfortable. Here are a few of the most
common treatments used in dogs and cats with cancer

  • Surgery. When a cancer can be eradicated, surgery is typically the first line of defense.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). SRS is an advanced form of radiation therapy that can often cure cancer – even some cancers previously considered untreatable.
  • Conventional radiation therapy. When surgery cannot safely remove the tumor, radiation can be used to shrink or destroy it.
  • Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs to damage or destroy cancer cells.
  • Palliative care. Sometimes, a cure is not possible, and the pet’s owner elects not to put their beloved pet through uncomfortable treatments that aren’t likely to be effective. In these cases, palliative care focuses on making the pet more comfortable with procedures designed to reduce pain and increase mobility.

There are other treatments available as well. Be sure to ask your veterinarian about all the options before making a decision.

Let Your Pet Know How Much They Mean to You This Month

Pet Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to honor your pet and let them know how much you love them. There’s nothing quite like a comfy place to rest after a long day of playing, so be sure to check out a custom dog bed or custom cat bed such as our most popular options, the Cuddle and the Throne. Give your pet the gift of a custom pet bed today – they deserve it.

Save a Life on Adopt a Shelter Pet Day/April 26, 2018

Pet overpopulation is a major issue in the United States. While there are many compassionate animal shelter and rescue workers dedicated to this cause, the simple fact of the matter is that there are not enough helping hands or space for the estimated 6.5 million homeless cats and dogs who enter shelters annually. Even with a significant no-kill movement underway, over a million cats and dogs are euthanized in this country each year just because shelters are overcrowded and underfunded.

Adopt a Shelter Pet Day (observed April 30th) was started to raise awareness about this critical issue and to encourage potential pet owners to adopt, not shop for their new friends. When you choose to adopt a shelter pet, you are not only gaining a loving new companion; you are also very likely saving a life. If this isn’t reason enough to visit your local animal shelter, here are some other things to consider, plus ways you can make your new four-legged bestie feel at home with a custom pet bed from J’adore.

Why You Should Adopt, Not Shop for New Pets

If you find the facts about shelter pets heartbreaking, as many animal lovers do, you should know that there is something you can do to help. When looking for a new animal friend, consider visiting a shelter first before checking out breeders offering litters of adorable purebred puppies or kittens. Not only can you find equally cute and endearing tiny bundles of joy at most shelters, but you may also be able to find your favorite breed. However, there is nothing quite so rewarding as opening your heart up to an adult mixed-breed cat or dog. In doing so, you’ll likely discover that love only grows with age and does not require a pedigree.

Because there are so many shelter pets, several pet adoption websites exist to help narrow down your search. Feel free to check out Petfinder or The Shelter Pet Project to discover the perfect match for your family and lifestyle.

Ways to Help Your Newly Adopted Cat or Dog Feel at Home

Once you have chosen your new friend-for-life and are ready to welcome them to their forever home, you will likely want to find ways to help them feel comfortable and let them know that they belong. A fantastic way to do this is to give them their own personal space. When you buy your new cat or dog a pet bed, you’ll both satisfy their desire for comfort as well as their innate need to ‘den’ in a secure location.

A custom pet bed from J’adore will help your new buddy feel right at home and will allow you to create a one-of-a-kind piece of décor that expresses your pet’s unique personality. Many pet parents love our cuddle pet bed, which is sure to satisfy even the ficklest of felines or most discerning of pooches. Each customizable pet bed is washable, with a reversible cover that allows you to extend its life and give it a fresh new look from time to time. We also use only the highest quality fiberfill to keep your pets’ joints and paws cozy at all times, and away from cold floors. Want to really spoil your newfound friend? Treat them to a customizable throne pet bed, complete with ultra-plush fleece and up to four fabrics of your choice.

For ideas and inspiration for welcoming your new shelter pet home and giving them their personal place to stay, contact J’adore. We’ll be happy to help you design a new custom pet bed and answer any questions you might have.

Pets Love Customizable J’adore Rectangle Pet Beds/April 19, 2018

We all know dogs and cats love to sleep. While canines tend to clock in around 12 hours of sleep daily, our feline friends are far lazier, spending up to 16 hours taking cat naps throughout the day. And as most pet owners know, there are few things more endearing than seeing a cat or dog napping comfortably.

Because your pet is likely to spend up to two-thirds of their life in dreamland, it makes sense to give them a place of their own to rest with ease. A rectangle bed from J’adore is one of the best ways you can pamper your pet and give them a stylish and comfortable place they can call their own.

Why You Should Give Your Dog or Cat a Custom Pet Bed of Their Own

While many pet owners admit to sharing the bed with their pets (perhaps nearly three-quarters of cat and dog owners in the U.S. do, according to surveys), this is not necessarily the best place for Fido or Fluffy to spend the night. And even if you can’t bear to think of sleeping away from your four-legged friend, there are still many hours during the day when your cat or dog may want to sleep in a place that is unquestionably ‘theirs.’

As territorial creatures, dogs, and cats both like having personal space they can claim for themselves and rest comfortably. While many pets are happy to choose the kitchen floor or the laundry hamper as their place to sprawl, you may not appreciate their decision, and it may not be the safest or even the most comfortable place for them to lie, especially if you have older pets with conditions such as arthritis.

Giving your cat or dog a warm and comfortable place to lie is an important part of pet ownership. By choosing a rectangle bed from J’adore, you will be providing your pet with a plush, cushioned surface they can rest their joints and bones that is well insulated from cold floors in winter or hot surfaces during the summer. You will also help keep your home tidier, as pet beds help concentrate animal odors, dander and shed hair to a specific location in the house.

When you get a customizable pet bed, such as the high-quality rectangle pet beds produced by J’adore, you will be able to choose up to four different fabrics and other finishing touches to ensure that the product matches your pet’s unique personality. It’s just one other way you can truly ensure your pet’s bed is a place that is meant just for them.

Reasons to Choose a Custom Rectangle Pet Bed for Your Furry Friend

While all custom pet beds from J’adore are made from the highest quality materials and are built to last, many pet parents agree that the rectangle pet bed is a wonderful re-imagining of the classic pet bed. While featuring a traditional design, you can design your pet bed to be as unconventional as you desire.

Each rectangle pet bed features a removable cover and is reversible, allowing you to keep your pet’s bed cleaner for longer. If you want to extend the time between washes, all you have to do is reverse the cover to present a fresh, clean side. Serged seams help protect against fraying, while our upholstery-grade zippers are made to last for years of use and easy access, allowing you to adjust the amount of fiberfill within as necessary. Our beds come heavily stuffed to ensure durability and your pet’s comfort.

If you have any questions about designing your own pet bed or if you would like to learn more about what goes into our rectangle pet beds, feel free to contact J’adore at any time. We are happy to work with you to design the ultimate sleep sanctuary for a special cat or dog in your home.

Keep Your Pet Safe for National Pet ID Week and Year-Round/April 12, 2018

All kinds of pets go missing each day. Whether it’s a determined dog that has managed to jump over the fence in his yard or a sneaky cat that has slipped through the front door, there are many ways that our furry friends can become lost. All told, it’s estimated that over 10 million pets go missing each year in the United States alone! That is why it is so vital to ensure that your pets are properly identifiable so that a moment of panic does not potentially become a lifetime of regret.

With the help of National Pet ID Week, observed this year from April 15-21, pet owners are encouraged to take the time necessary to make sure that their pets are correctly ID’d and micro-chipped. It takes moments to get tags or chips that could save your four-legged friend’s life and make sure he or she remains close. Once you have taken steps to keep your pet safe, why not treat them to a secure space they can call their own, with a custom pet bed from J’adore?

Preventing Your Pets from Becoming Another Unfortunate Statistic

Nobody plans to lose their pet, but for many families this an unfortunate reality. While many pets simply escape their homes, yards or other enclosures, others may be stolen or hiding due to illness. Whatever the case may be, the statistics for unidentified lost pets are grim. Less than two percent of lost cats and only 15 to 20 percent of dogs are ever recovered. The sad fact is that without identification, most missing pets are never reunited with their original owners.

It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to preventing pet loss. Getting external ID tags for your pet’s collar, as well as getting your pet microchipped, are a great way to better the odds that your pet will be reconnected with you if they become lost. If your cat or dog ever ends up at a shelter, routine checks for identification should be able to bring up your information, provided you have at least a phone number or address listed on the tag or registered with the chip. As many animal shelters are overcrowded as it is, it is essential that shelter workers can identify your pet as quickly as possible.

What To Do if You Suspect Your Cat or Dog is Missing

Assuming you have given your pet highly visible ID tags and they are micro-chipped, the best thing to do if you suspect your pet is missing or stolen is not to panic but act immediately. If you are certain that your pet is no longer on your property, you may consider asking neighbors if they have seen your cat or dog or placing fliers. Check local shelters or rescue groups to see if your pet has entered their system. You can even leverage social media to expand your search and to keep more eyes on the lookout. In short, be prepared to utilize whatever resources are available. Your persistence could make all the difference.

Creating a Safe, Personalized Place for Your Pets

While it is hopeful that you will never have to deal with the terror that comes with losing a lost pet, if you have taken the right precautions and ID’ed your pet, you should allow yourself to have some peace of mind as a responsible pet parent. To show your pet your love, and to give them a safe space for their comfort, you could consider getting them their own personalized pet bed. You can design all the details, and even have their name embroidered, so there is no question who the owner is.

Each custom-made cuddle pet bed is made from furniture-grade upholstery for the utmost in creature comfort. If your pet is a heavy shedder, you can reverse the bed and give it a fresh new look when needed. To learn more about how you can make a one-of-a-kind bed that is as unique and special as your fuzzy companion is to you, contact J’adore for more details.

Learn How to Keep Your Pets Safe During National Poison Prevention Week/March 22, 2018

It’s something no pet parent wants to contemplate—the idea that their precious cat or dog could have swallowed something poisonous or encountered a hazardous substance around the home. As unpleasant this thought may be, it’s essential that all pet owners be aware of possible dangers lurking in the house or backyard that their animals may meet. Because the threat of poisoning can affect any family, National Poison Prevention Week is observed nationwide during the third week in March (this year between March 18th and the 24th), with the goal of raising awareness of the potential dangers posed by cleaning products, medicines, pesticides, food poisoning and more. To avoid a trip to the emergency vet and possible tragedy, read on to discover some of the most common toxic or otherwise harmful household hazards your pet may encounter.

Common Household and Backyard Poisons to Watch Out For

If you’re like most pet owners, you go out of your way to ensure that your pets are kept safe and contented, from the food that you give them to the choice of toys you provide. However, many everyday household products or plants may be dangerous to your pet.

Human medications pose one of the most easily avoided causes of poisoning in pets. Just as parents of small children are advised to keep all medicines securely out of reach, the same thing goes for pet owners as well. Thankfully, your furry friend likely lacks opposable thumbs, so merely ensuring that all pill bottles are shut tight and that no medications are left out in the open will probably do the trick. Similarly, you should never give your pet drugs intended for human use unless directed to by a vet.

Many popular types of houseplants and backyard ornamentals are also potentially dangerous for our pets. Among the most lethal and most common ones found in warmer climates is the sago palm. This innocuous looking plant can cause severe liver damage or failure when ingested by dogs. Other plants wary pet owners should keep an eye out for are most varieties of lilies, morning glories, oleander, and poinsettia. If you suspect that your pet has chewed on or eaten a part of a poisonous plant, or they are vomiting or showing signs of distress, be sure to bring them in to see an emergency vet as soon as possible.

Why You Should Watch What You Put in Your Doggy Bag

While your dog or cat is undoubtedly a part of the family that does not mean that everything that you eat is safe for them as well. In fact, a wide variety of human foods can make our animal friends quite ill. Some of these stomach-turning treats include onions, garlic, chocolate, raisins or grapes, macadamia nuts and sugarless gum (or anything containing the additive xylitol). In small amounts, many of these foods just cause nausea or perhaps some vomiting, while others are so potentially harmful that even a tiny nibble could put your pet’s life at risk.

Why risk giving your pet a stomach ache? Be sure to check with your vet about safe human food offerings (including well-cooked turkey and spinach for dogs or fish for your cat) before you give in to their begging.

Safe Ways to Pamper Your Pet Each Day

Now that you know of some of the most common household dangers to be aware of when it comes to keeping your pets free from harm, you may be curious about how you can treat your pet in a loving, safe and healthy way. One of the best ways to show your pet that you love them is by providing them with their own private, comfy place to lie down, such as with a custom pet bed designed by you from J’adore. Whether you choose one of our popular reversible cuddle pet beds or treat your furry companion to a plush and luxurious throne bed, you can rest assured that they will have a safe place to call their own.

Reasons to Get a Custom Made J’adore Square Pet Bed for Your Furry Friend/March 16, 2018

Dogs and cats are renowned for their ability to find the craziest places to sleep. Whether it is sprawled out on the floor by the air conditioner or curled tightly within the basin of the bathroom sink, our animal friends seem to find rest in places we’d never think to consider ourselves. However, this doesn’t mean that our pets don’t enjoy basic creature comforts as well, such as having their very own. What better way to celebrate upcoming National Puppy Day (March 23rd) or Respect Your Cat Day (March 28th) than with a new custom square pet bed from J’adore, made especially for your special furry member of the family?

How Pet Beds Help Keep Your Pal Comfy – and Your Home Clean

Cats and dogs alike are creatures of habit that appreciate having a place to call their own. By providing your pet with their own bed, you are acknowledging the fact that your companion needs a private area where he or she can feel safe, preferably out of the way of the usual household busyness. This private area will improve your pet’s overall sense of security and well-being, while also giving them a comfortable place to rest their paws.

Your dog or cat won’t be the only ones to benefit from having their own bed, however. If you’re like many owners who love their pets, but not necessarily the fur that they shed, you’ll be relieved to know that providing a bed for your furry friend is a great way to contain the shedding to “their” space. It’s better than having the hair spread wherever they may lie around the house. The same goes for dirt and allergy-causing pet dander, meaning that your new pet bed might be a fantastic solution to the age-old problem of keeping the house clean when you have animals around.

Creating Your Pet’s Perfect Space with a J’adore Square Pet Bed

Choosing the right pet bed for that special dog or cat in your life is an important decision. With a wide range of choices available, you may not be sure which type of bed will best suit your companion. At J’adore, we try to make this decision simple by allowing you to design your own bed, customizing it to fit your pet’s needs and personality, as well as your own.

Our custom-made square pet beds are a classic favorite made from furniture-grade upholstery to ensure your pet’s utmost comfort. Unlike many pet beds, our square pet bed can be flipped to reveal a new look, or to simply extend the life of your dog or cat’s bed.

You can use our interactive design tool to select the fabrics and colors you like, along with any add-ons you’d want, such as your pet’s name embroidered in the middle or a waterproof cover. If you’d like some design assistance, we’re happy to provide suggestions as well, along with providing several semi-custom beds in some of our more popular color and fabric combinations. All custom-made beds are made ready to ship in 2-4 weeks guaranteed, while our pre-designed beds ship in 1-3 weeks after we receive your order. Have a great idea for a custom bed using a fabric, size or customization option you don’t see on our site? Be sure to contact us, and we’d be happy to work with you to help make it happen!

Isn’t it time you treated your four-legged companion to their own private space to unwind and relax? Show them how much you care with a new one-of-a-kind custom pet bed that the two of you are sure to love and appreciate for years to come.

Dog-Friendly Outdoor Activities You and Your Pet Will Love/March 8, 2018

Spring is just around the corner, and for many people, this means planning and looking forward to a year filled with busy outdoor activities. Our pets are also likely looking forward to enjoying the sun and fresh air after having spent perhaps several months indoors. Just like their owners, dogs can start to feel a bit stir crazy, especially if their exercise needs have not been met.

With March containing two dog-inspired holidays, namely K-9 Veterans Day on March 13 and National Puppy Day on the 23rd, now is the perfect time to plan on doing some fun and exciting outdoor activities with your favorite canine pal. Here’s some inspiration to help you get started, along with some ways to help your pampered pooch unwind at the end of a busy day.

Fun for Dog Breeds of All Shapes and Sizes

Dogs love the outdoors, so it’s no surprise that as soon as the weather begins to warm our four-legged friends may start to nudge us for longer walks or more time spent at the park. Yet even if you’re naturally a homebody, it’s probably a good idea to heed nature’s call and consider a few outdoor activities to get both you and your dog out of the house.

Off-leash dog parks are an excellent choice for many dogs and their owners. These can be found in most urban and suburban areas and are often separated out into sections for small or shy dogs, as well as having big open areas for large breed and active dogs. Off-leash dog parks provide excellent socialization opportunities for dogs, and potentially for their owners as well, allowing pet parents to mingle while their dogs enjoy chasing each other or playing fetch.

If you’d like to head out of the city, hitting the trails for a hike is another fun activity many dogs enjoy. If your dog loves car rides, you could consider making a day trip out of it, or even take your dog along for a camping trip. The great outdoors is filled with unique scents and sounds to tantalize and please your dogs’ senses. Just make sure you keep your dog on-leash always and observe any pet restrictions found at some parks.

When choosing outdoor activities, it may also be helpful to consider your dog’s breed and their natural inclinations. For example, Labrador and golden retrievers bred to flush out ducks from hiding and to retrieve them from water tend to adore time spent swimming or chasing sticks, while herding dogs such as border collies enjoy having opportunities to display their exceptional agility and stamina. Be ready to experiment, however—you may be surprised by what your dog’s favorite outdoor activities may be!

Why You Should Have Your Pet Spayed or Neutered/February 22, 2018

February 27 is World Spay Day.  To understand the importance of having your pet spayed or neutered, consider the numbers involved.  According to the latest estimates, there are 144.1 to 183.9 million pet dogs and cats in the USA.  The number of dogs and cats entering in shelters each year is between six and eight million.  Of these, three million are euthanized while most of them are healthy and treatable and could have been adopted into new homes.

Spaying or neutering is making your pet infertile by partially or wholly removing its reproductive organs.  Kittens may be spayed or neutered as early as 16 weeks, while the owners of young dogs usually wait until the animals are six to seven months old.  Taking this measure has many advantages for you as a pet owner, for your pet and for society.

Advantages of spaying or neutering for your pet and you

The main advantage is that you’re not stuck with a nest of kittens or puppies.

When cats become fertile, their hormones cause them to develop unpleasant habits, such as spraying urine, straying from home, nightly fights, and whining.  Spaying or neutering them will calm them down so that once again, they’re wonderful companions.  Dogs, too, may start displaying unwanted behavior such as straying.  If your dog is often in the company of other dogs, if he can run freely in a dog pound or dog daycare, it may be wise to have him treated to prevent a nest of puppies.

The health advantages are essential, too.  The chance of developing diseases such as mammary cancer or leukosis (FELV) are reduced to nearly zero. While some diseases aren’t contagious to humans, pets can affect each other through sexual contact or fights, which may even result in death.  Spayed and neutered cats tend to live longer than their untreated friends. So, treating your pet means giving it a chance to a longer life.

Advantages for society and overpopulated pet shelters

Dogs and cats are fertile animals and reproduce swiftly.  Combined with irresponsible pet ownership, a surplus is created quickly: there are more puppies and kittens than people who want them. Shelters are always full, and every year too many pets are put to sleep.

Colonies of stray cats or dogs can cause a lot of inconvenience by tearing open garbage bags and leaving behind droppings.  These animals live in abominable circumstances too.  Often, they are sick, they have fight wounds and suffer hunger.  Luckily, many people care for these poor creatures and volunteer to help them.  Treatment costs a lot of money and time though.  Have your cat or dog neutered or spayed so that you don’t contribute to stray animals suffering.

When should you have your cat neutered or spayed?

The rumor that a she-cat should throw a first litter before being neutered is untrue.  Neither do you need to wait until she’s had her first heat.  On the contrary, the chance of health problems only increases.  A kitten’s operation usually doesn’t take long, and since the little one is young, it recovers very quickly.

Contact your vet to know the exact time for spaying or neutering your dog.  The right time depends on several factors such as race and build, so you’ll want an expert’s opinion.

When the time is ripe, follow your vet’s instructions.  Usually, your pet is not allowed to eat the evening before the operation.  If you don’t have a pet bed yet, consider buying one.  Even though your pet will probably come through the operation quite well, it’s good to give them a place of their own, where they feel comfortable and safe.  Kittens may need only a few hours of sleep and will already be running, jumping, and playing as if nothing ever happened.  A dog may need a little bit longer, but they too won’t suffer any adverse effects.  The animals grow to be just as big as their fellows, or even surpass them.

Why Your Pet and You Will Love a J’adore Round Pet Bed/February 15, 2018

It’s wonderful to see your cat or dog snoozing or sound asleep. Your pets take their ultra-long naps in your home because here, they feel comfortable and safe. As a pet owner, you want to treat your feline or canine friend well, giving them good food, playing with them, and offering them a cozy home.

Opinions differ whether you should allow your pet to sleep with you in your bed. Your sleep quality and hygiene may be in jeopardy, but on the other hand, the bond with your pet grows tighter. Even if you “co-sleep” with your cat or dog, consider buying them a pet bed. Your own bed may be ever so comfortable, your pet may be very clean, and you may wash your blankets every week. Still, your pet is a social creature. It likes to be where you are.

Place a bed for them where you are active during the day. Whether this is your living room, your office, or your garden shed it doesn’t make a difference for your four-footed companion. They may need a moment to get accustomed to their pet bed and its environment, but they’ll love a private space which enhances their sense of security.

A choice between eight models

Do browse our web-shop to choose a model which suits both your pet and you. Consider that many factors which play a role in the choice of a bed for yourself, apply to pet beds too. All J’adore pet beds are amply stuffed with fiberfill, providing your pet uniform support. They don’t sag or lose shape, and they offer excellent insulation and ventilation. Also, the upholstery is pre-washed breathable cotton or a polyester material which doesn’t retain odors, which is flea-resistant and mite-resistant, and which also withstands scratching and clawing.

The Cuddle bed and the luxurious Throne bed are our most popular models. Our Round beds, however, are excellent too, offering a lot of freedom for movement in any direction. If your dog likes to sprawl out, or if your cat feels most comfortable curling up, then a round pet bed is the choice to make.

Scientists and vets are yet uncertain whether the form of a pet bed makes a difference to pets. In 2014, cat owners around the world experimented by forming circles on the floor to trap their pet inside. Some cats do seem to find circles and spirals intriguing. Dogs too, do many things in a circle before lying down, before you throw the ball, or before “potty time.”

The most important advantage of a round pet bed for you as a caring pet owner is clear: thanks to the shape, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any fur, hair or sand sticking in any corners. This bed is extremely easy to clean!

The same high-quality characteristics as other J’adore pet beds

Just like all our beds, the round model is handcrafted and made in the USA. You can choose up to five sizes, and a multitude of fashionable designs are at your disposal. Whether your interior is modern, retro, romantic, or Feng Shui, you are bound to find a design to complement your floor, furniture, and drapes. Our round pet beds are 180 degrees flippable too, providing a different look if you want a change of scenery.

Experiment with our user-friendly interactive design tool to create your ideal pet bed, or order one of our pre-designed or ready-to-ship pet beds. If you’re out of ideas, or if you need any advice, do not hesitate to ask. Just like you, we love pets, and together with you, we’re sure to find the best possible sleep nest for them.

Use February to Commit to Your Pet’s Health, Happiness, and Well-being/February 8, 2018

February is a big month for our furry friends! Not only does this month’s calendar include a few of our favorite pet holidays (February 22 is “Walking the Dog Day,” while February is the Humane Society’s “World Spay Day”) but it is also a month-long chance to think seriously about pet health. Indeed, February is both “Cat Health Month” and “Pet Dental Health Month.” If you’ve been lax about the physical or dental health of your cat or dog, this month is the perfect opportunity to redouble your focus on their wellbeing and overall happiness.

If you are reading this blog post, it goes without saying that you want to give your pet a great life. Why else would you pamper your cats or dogs with a Cuddle Bed or Throne Bed from J’adore Custom Pet Beds? However, because we are used to human healthcare and human hygiene, we sometimes forget what constitutes “healthy habits” for our four-legged friends. With that thought in mind, here are a few key health tips that you can implement this month to keep your kitty purring and your dog wagging.

1.  Consult your vet about diet

Making sure your pet is eating the right food—and eating the right amount of it—is crucial to ensuring a happy, healthy life. This month, think critically about what you are feeding your dog or cat. Are you choosing food based on price or convenience (e.g., what’s available at the grocery store)–or is it based on nutrition? Are you tweaking your pet’s diet accordingly to match with different life stages? Would your pet be better off with a dry food diet or a wet food diet—or a mixture of both? If you haven’t had a detailed conversation with your vet about diet, make February the month to change that. (Regular exercise will also help to keep your pet lean and healthy.)

2.  Clean (or replace) your pet’s belongings

Pet bowls are breeding grounds for germs and bacteria. Pet toys, blankets, sweaters, and beds can quickly accumulate dirt, dust, yeast, bacteria, and mold. To keep your dogs and cats healthier—and to keep your home fresh and hygienic—make a habit out of cleaning your pet’s belongings more frequently.

Instead of rinsing food or water bowls once every few days, wash them thoroughly with soap and water every day. Instead of throwing toys back in the “toy box” after every use, wash them every few weeks—whether in the washing machine, in the dishwasher, or in the sink. Instead of letting your pet’s bedding go without a clean, try to vacuum any hair or debris weekly and wash when needed. One of the wonderful things about custom dog beds and custom cat beds from J’adore is that our beds include washable covers that are easy to remove.

3.  Make oral health a priority

Many pets never receive at-home dental care. This oversight is understandable: many pet owners don’t know how to handle oral health care for their pets and don’t realize how important it is. Unfortunately, dental disease is common in cats and dogs. This type of oral health issue can leave your furry friend in near-constant pain, making it difficult for them to eat and drastically diminishing their overall quality of life. Oral health problems can also lead to even more serious issues if left untreated, such as heart disease or kidney failure.

Luckily, there are things you can do to avoid dental disease in your dog or cat. First, keep up with your veterinary appointments. Your vet should perform a dental exam as part of the standard annual checkup. Secondly, you can try brushing your pet’s teeth. Some cats and dogs are more open to it than others, so it’s at least worth an attempt. Third, look for pet toys, treats, and food that are good for oral health. Certain treats are specifically billed for their plaque-fighting abilities, while some toys include enzymes that are great for your pet’s teeth.

Finally, don’t forget to give your pet a comfortable place to sleep! With a brand new custom bed from J’adore Custom Bet Beds, your cat or dog will truly be living like a king or queen.

Exploring the Benefits of the J’adore Pillow Bed/January 25, 2018

There are many things that we can do to pamper our pets, from getting them the best quality food possible to ensuring they have plenty of toys to keep them busy. However, one thing you can do to pamper them also provides other advantages, including benefits to their health. Providing your pet a comfortable place to sleep is one of the best things you can do for them. Quality promotes better behavior and better overall health the same way in our pets as it does in humans.

A quick look at J’adore and our many custom pet bed options will show you that we have a lot of variety, making it easy for you to find the right dog bed or cat bed for your pet. Today, we’re going to highlight one of the simpler, but by no means lesser, pet beds in our collection. The J’adore Pillow Bed is the perfect pet bed for the dog or cat that is looking for a soft and comfortable spot to curl up when they sleep. Modest in its design, this pillow bed may seem fairly unassuming, but it has plenty to offer.

When you work with us, in addition to choosing fun details such as the fabric for your bed or having your pet’s name stitched onto the cover, you also get to choose more pertinent details such as the size of the bed that is right for your pet. The correct size in a pillow bed ensures your pet has enough space to curl up or stretch out while they sleep. You can get the perfect miniature bed for the smaller pet or choose a massive pillow for your oversized canine companion when you shop from our selection.

If you’re trying to decide whether the J’adore Pillow Bed is right for your pet or if another option, such as the J’adore Cuddle Bed, might be the right fit, then here are some things to consider. The Pillow Bed is a great pet bed for those who are seeking a portable option for travel, such as camping trips and much more. That way you can bring a little piece of home along with you, something that can be especially beneficial if your pet is new to traveling.

Among the benefits of our version of the pillow bed is the removable cover, which makes it easy to clean. After all, your pet deserves a clean space to settle down and sleep, so a removable cover helps you to wash up their bed and keep it clean easily.

Quality materials used for the cover, as well as the filling, make it a durable option that will last for a long while, something that you and your pet will both appreciate. Waterproof inserts are even available to make cleaning your pet bed easier than ever. We’ll work with you to find fabrics you love and create a truly unique pet bed for your companion.

It goes without saying that we love the J’adore Pillow Bed and think it will be a great option for your pet. However, it’s not the only pet bed we have in our lineup, and every pet is different. We suggest you take a look at the various custom pet beds we have available and think about your pet’s sleep habits before you make a final decision.

Whether you decide on the J’adore Pillow Bed, the Throne Bed, the Cuddle Bed or any of the other great beds we have available, we’re sure your pet will enjoy having a great new spot to sleep.

5 Incentives to Adopt, Don’t Shop and Save a Pet’s Life/January 18, 2018

It’s no secret that your pet does much to bring joy and comfort to your life. However, when you decide to get a new pet the simple act of where you find your new companion can make a big difference as well.

Though some people may have valid reasons for choosing to purchase a pet from a breeder, in many instances adopting a pet from a shelter or other adoption service is an incredible choice. With Change a Pet’s Life Day on January 24 we want to look at some of those incentives and why you may choose to adopt the next time you look to bring a new furry friend into the family.

Also, because we are based in Kansas City we’re sharing several local animal rescues as well one national one.  Be sure to local for local rescues in your area.

1. It’s Cost Efficient – Whereas purchasing a new cat or dog from a breeder can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, adopting a pet from a shelter is much less expensive. That leaves new pet owners a lot more money to spend on taking care of their new companion – including getting them spayed or neutered if necessary, getting their shots and getting them all the accessories they need, such as a J’adore custom pet bed.

2. It Fights Puppy Mills – You’ve probably heard a lot about puppy mills already. However, you may be surprised to learn that it’s just as much a problem now as it has ever been. Many seemingly legitimate breeders selling puppies through means such as Internet ads are often connected to puppy mills. It’s far better to combat this problem by rescuing your new pet.

3. It Makes Room for Other Animals in Need – It’s important to remember that when you adopt from a shelter, in addition to giving a pet a home you are making room for more animals to get off the streets and to find their own forever homes. It’s one of the best possible reasons to adopt. To get started, you can check out these Kansas City area animal shelters.

4. It Saves a Life – It’s an unfortunate reality that too few people consider adoption when seeking a new pet. Over 2.7 million dogs and cats are euthanized every year in the United States alone because shelters fill up too quickly and there are not enough foster homes that are capable of taking in animals until a forever home is ready for them.

5. You’ll Get a Great New Pet – Every pet is amazing, but there is something special about adopted pets. Whether you adopt a purebred pet from a rescue organization or a mutt from a local shelter, it will almost feel like fate that brought you and your pet together.

On top of all that, you’ll have a ton of fun things to do with your new companion, whether that’s hiking and camping with a new pup, relaxing with your new cat as you read a good book, or posting tons of selfies of you and your pet together online. It’s easy to see why adopting is a great idea. All that leaves is finding the right organization to help you in your search for a terrific pet.

Numerous fantastic Kansas City animal shelters can help you find the right pet. You can also get in touch with many rescue organizations. Kitty City is a great place to start if you’re seeking a cat, while Chain of Hope caters to both cats and Dogs. You can also check out Petfinder to browse pets of all kinds in your area.

At J’adore we wish you luck in finding a new furry family member if you’re looking, and hope to see you soon as you shop for a J’adore Throne Bed for the new King or Queen in your house.

5 Reasons a Good Walk Keeps Pets Happy and Healthy/January 11, 2018

After too much time spent cooped up inside or at a desk working, it’s only natural for a person to need some release.  For the human population, there are plenty of ways to expend excess energy, such as a trip to the gym or even an energetic bout of housecleaning.

Unfortunately, people sometimes forget that our pets need exercise just like we do.  While dog owners will walk their pet so they can do their business, they might not give them enough time to enjoy their walk and expend that excess energy.  Cat owners often overlook the fact that cats can be walked altogether, preferring to leave them to their own devices indoors.  However, walking a cat is an excellent way to promote healthy exercise.

January is Walk Your Pet Month, so here are some reasons you may want to pick up some new gear and work out a new walking routine for your furry friends.

1. It Promotes Weight Loss – As is the case with many people, pets can be prone to excessive weight gain.  Walking is a healthy way to reduce a pet’s weight without overly restricting their diets.  Even if your pet isn’t currently overweight now, ensuring that they get exercise, especially at a younger age, can help to ensure that they do not put on weight now, which in turn can help to prolong their life well into the future.

2. It Makes Pets Behave Better – If you’ve had a problem with your pup becoming overly excited over little things, barking excessively or even scratching or digging, then making sure they get enough exercise is a simple and healthy solution.  Sometimes behavior issues are merely the result of a pet that is not stimulated enough, and giving them opportunities to expend this energy will help them behave better at home.

3. It Strengthens Bonds – Though you already love your pet, and your pet already loves you, it never hurts to strengthen those bonds.  Going on regular walks and partaking in other activities together is a great way to do this.  Strong bonds not only make your pet feel comfortable and loved but make it easier for you to communicate with and train your pet.

4. Get Over Fears – You may have already written your pet off as timid or fearful, but that doesn’t have to be the case.  Taking your pet on regular walks is a great way to help open them up to new situations and help them get over their fear of new situations.  Walks are an especially great option for cat owners, as cats can be particularly timid pets.

5. It Helps Your Pet Sleep Better – Anybody who has ever had a long day at the gym knows that plenty of great exercise makes it easier to slip into a long and comfortable night’s sleep.  That is just as true for our pets. Sleep is essential for our canine and feline companions, so exercise can help to ensure that they are getting enough of it, and the right types of sleep.

Of course, you also want to be sure that they have the right bed to sleep in once they are exhausted with all that walking.  Might we suggest one of our great J’adore Custom Pet Bed options?  From something simple, such as the J’adore Pillow Bed to an elegant J’adore Throne Bed, there’s something available for every pet and every pet owner.  Look at our site to browse every option and find the bed that is right for your furry family members.

New Year’s Resolutions for You and Your Pet/December 28, 2017

The New Year is just around the corner, and if you’re anything like the rest of us, you’re probably already thinking about your resolutions. Drink more water, exercise more, eat healthier—there are any of several things that people promise themselves they’ll do to make their own lives better. However, what many people don’t think about is the importance of what they can do in the coming year to make life better for their pets.

You may already be providing your pet with plenty of love and care already. However, there is always just a little bit more we can do to be sure they get the best lives possible. Everything from busy schedules to bad weather can get in the way of doing our best for our pets, but these simple resolutions can be put into place every week – or even every day – to enrich their lives over the long term and be sure that they are happier and healthier in the long run.

If you are a dog owner, it should almost go without saying that you should take a little time at the beginning of the year to reexamine how much time you are giving your dog for walks. Sure, you may be giving your pup enough time to do their business and get out a little extra energy. However, a nice long walk does just as much good for your dog as it does for you. Rather than just spend fifteen minutes going out around the block, why not dedicate twice that much time a day to walking your dog? You can even increase that to an hour-long walk per week to get out, explore and stimulate your dog’s senses. Both of you will benefit from these excursions.

Remember too that your pup needs a good rest after their walk. Find a quality bed to help them get cozy once you get home. Every dog is different, so if you’re interested in the custom pet beds we have available at J’adore you might be interested in something like our Cuddle bed or even our Throne bed – an especially good option for smaller breeds. The Throne bed can be an excellent idea for the winter months if you want to help them warm up after a long walk in the cool air, as it includes an inner blanket.

As for cat owners, it can sometimes be a little difficult to remember how much exercise your feline friend needs, especially when they spend so much of the day sleeping. However, regular exercise is essential for cats too, and they often need a little encouragement to get it. Invest in some toys and be sure to spend a little time each day playing with your cat. It may take some time to get used to playing with you if they aren’t already, and you may need to figure out which time of the day they are most active. However, with a little bit of practice, we’re sure that you and your cat will both come to love the time that you spend with one another chasing string and tossing around knitted mice.

Now, when we think about exercise and our canine companions we most often think about daily walks. However, dogs can also go along with their human families on all kinds of activities. Next year, plan some activities that your dog can come along on. Your pup is sure to love a day out in the woods if you take him out hiking with you, and with the correct gear your dog can enjoy a weekend camping trip along with the rest of your crew. Among your camping gear, be sure to choose a good dog bed. While you may not want to bring his everyday pet bed along, an option such as a J’adore Pillow bed can help guarantee your best camping buddy isn’t sleeping on the hard ground.

Often, when pet owners think about grooming it only regards a bit of extra brushing. That’s why we suggest you “brush up” on your grooming knowledge in the New Year, if we may use that pun. Even a little daily grooming such as a quick brushing goes a long way toward keeping your pet healthier and, yes, this counts for shorter-haired breeds as well. Another thing to remember is that grooming practices extend to your pet’s oral health, and you should begin to brush your pet’s teeth if you don’t do so already.

How do you think you could improve your pet’s life in the coming year? No pet owner is perfect, and there are always little things that each of us could do better. At J’adore we look forward to each and every day with our pets and always strive to do everything we can to improve the lives of our furry friends – just one of the many reasons we look to give them the best sleep experience possible.

Help Pets Live Life on the Edge with J’adore Edgy Pet Beds/December 14, 2017

Are you on the hunt for the right pet bed? You probably already know that can be a lot more difficult than most people think. Quality pet beds should meet everybody’s needs and expectations – your own, your families’, and most importantly your pets’. That means they should look great, feel great, and be able to fit well into your home’s interior space.

You can probably find many different custom pet beds at J’adore that fit all the above criteria. However, we’re going to take a moment to talk about J’adore Edgy pet beds. There are many reasons that you and your pets – both dogs and cats – are destined to fall in love with one of these great pet bed designs.

Perhaps the first thing you will want to know is how a J’adore Edgy pet bed can benefit your pet’s sleep. After all, you want to be sure that your cat or dog is getting plenty of rest and that they are as comfortable as possible. Sleep is a vital part of pet health, just as it is vital for our own. Just as each of us sleeps better when we feel safe and secure as we sleep, the same is true for our pets.

One of the benefits of the Edgy custom pet bed model over others is that it has high, sturdy sides for pets to recline against as they sleep. If you ever notice that your cat or dog enjoys cuddling up in the corner of your sofa or against a wall, that might be a good indicator that the J’adore Edgy pet bed is a good model to consider for their sleep needs.

The high walls of these pet beds aren’t just great for pet comfort, however. Because of this box-like construction, it’s easy to find a good spot for a J’adore Edgy pet bed inside your home. You can easily find the purr-fect corner to set up a nook for your kitty. Or, for your favorite watchdog, you could align your pet bed with a window so your pup can check out everything that’s going on outside.

As with other J’adore custom pet beds, these Edgy designs come with the convenience of pet owners in mind. They feature concealed zippers so you can remove the inserts easily, a feature that makes for easy cleaning so you can always be sure that your furry companions’ sleeping corner is fresh and tidy.

Of course, you can also fully customize your order as you see fit, including up to four different fabric options. You can add fun details such as your pet’s name emblazoned right on the bed so that everybody who walks into your home knows exactly who owns that sleeping spot.

Still, the Edgy pet bed may not be right for every pet, and that’s why we provide a range of options at J’adore. If you still aren’t sure whether the Edgy bed is the right one for you and your pet, why not look around at all the different choices of pet beds we have on our site?

For example, for a simple but effective bed that your pet can cuddle up in, there’s nothing better than the aptly named J’adore Cuddle bed. Or if you would like something a little more luxurious, and that will help your pet stay warm through the long winter months with its thickly blanketed interior, check out the J’adore Throne bed. Take your time to browse and find a great bed to help your pet get the best sleep possible.

Simple Ways to Make Your Cats Sleep Better/December 8, 2017

Every cat owner knows his or her furry companion sleeps a lot. That means that they probably don’t need any help from us to get even more sleep, right? Well, that’s not necessarily the case. Our cats may be getting a lot of rest, but that doesn’t mean that the sleep they are getting is necessarily of the greatest quality. In fact, if they don’t have a good place to relax, or if their sleep is being interrupted too often, they might not be getting nearly as much sleep as they need, even if it seems to as that they are sleeping for most of the day.

To understand why this is the case, you must first understand a few facts about the nature of sleep when it comes to cats. First and foremost is how much cats sleep. It may seem bizarre to us humans who only sleep for about eight hours a day on average, but cats typically sleep for sixteen hours a day – and that’s for an adult cat. Kittens and older cats can sleep for even longer than that.

Another misconception that many people have is that cats are nocturnal by nature, meaning that cats sleep all day and are awake all night. However, cats spend most of the day as well as most of the night sleeping. The times when they are most active are at dusk and dawn. In other words, they are “crepuscular” – the same as many wild cats, such as ocelots and jaguars.

So, what does all this mean for humans who want to help their feline companions get the best sleep possible? One of the biggest things to start with is where your cat is getting her sleep. It stands to reason that if your cat is sleeping for most of her day, then she should have a good bed. However, surprisingly few people think about getting a good, quality pet bed for their cat.

It is important to point out that a quality bed provides more than merely a soft place for a cat to rest. A good bed also offers somewhere where a cat can feel protected and safe. An excellent example of this is the J’adore Cuddle bed, which has raised sides. The J’adore Cuddle and J’adore Cozy Cuddle also have raised sides that can help provide this sort of security for your kitty companion.

You’ll find your cat eagerly snuggling up in this bed for the same reason that they instinctively curl up inside boxes and other nooks and crannies inside your house for a quick catnap. It helps them feel as if they can hide away from predators. We’ll take this moment to point out another quick cat sleep fact. Cats have a few different stages of sleep – a shallow stage in which they are almost partially awake, and a deeper stage of sleep. Allowing them a safe place to rest helps to ensure they are getting enough of this deeper stage of sleep.

Simon in a J’adore Throne Bed

However, some cats prefer “higher altitudes” if you will, and a custom pet bed such as the J’adore Cuddle may not be for them. For those cats that seem to choose lofty spots to get their rest, a custom cat bed such as the J’adore Throne can be a good choice. The J’adore Throne can be a good choice if you have a cat whose sleep is interrupted continuously because they pick spots such as the top of the sofa to rest. The J’adore throne can give them a similar spot where they won’t be interrupted, but they can still sit up high and maintain their lofty position over their household King or Queendom.

Although all kitties have the same sleep needs, every cat will have different sleep preferences. That’s why it’s important as a cat owner to pay attention to the way your cat sleeps and what they will likely prefer when it comes to a bed. That way you can make an informed choice when shopping for a custom cat bed.

Why Sleep is So Crucial for Pets/November 30, 2017

You’ve no doubt heard from countless sources how important sleep is for your health. The same is true for our furry friends. Unfortunately, for as much as people educate themselves on dog and cat training, dietary requirements and exercise needs, many pet owners know surprisingly little about their pets’ sleep needs.

Have you ever noticed how cranky you feel when you don’t get enough sleep? If so, then it should come as no surprise that a lack of proper sleep can affect pets in the same way. When a dog doesn’t sleep enough, stress hormones can build up in their bodies, leading to unwanted behaviors or even aggression.

For our feline companions, sleep is just as essential. First-time cat owners are often confounded by how much their cat sleeps, and may even worry that they are sleeping too much. However, the average cat sleeps about fifteen hours a day, with kittens and older cats sleeping upwards of twenty hours per day.

This amount of sleep is because, domesticated though they may be, cats are still predators by nature. Because they’re predators, they spend much of their time sleeping, which allows them to build up the energy reserves they need to go on the hunt. (It just so happens that for most of our kitty companions, ‘going on the hunt’ means chasing a piece of string or a mouse toy.)

Getting enough sleep gives your cat the mental as well as the physical energy it needs during those waking hours. If you want your cat to remain active and playful, regardless of its age, it is important to be sure that they get the sleep they need.

Dogs generally need a bit less sleep, though still more than humans. You can expect your pup to need about twelve to fourteen hours of sleep per day. As with cats, it’s also good to note that puppies and older dogs will probably need a bit more.

A good pet bed is one of the best ways to ensure your pet is getting the sleep that he or she needs. Pet beds do far more than simply provide comfort (though that is definitely a benefit). Well-designed pet beds consider your pet’s basic instincts and allow them to sleep better based on factors encoded into their natural biology.

For example, the Cuddle custom pet bed from J’adore comes with raised sides, which provides both dogs and cats with a sense of security that will allow them to enter a deeper and more restful sleep. If you have a pet that is inclined to curl up in any stray box that they find, then this may be the perfect bed option for them.

Another great option is a custom pet bed like the Throne from J’adore. This bed type is raised up from the floor. Cats feel more comfortable when perched in a high spot, so opting for something that gives them a little height can be a great idea when seeking a custom cat bed. (Do note that some dogs also prefer high places for sleep, especially smaller breeds—so the Throne can be a great custom dog bed as well.)

If you’re on the hunt for a new pet bed and aren’t sure where to start, simply observing the way your pets sleep is a great starting point. Even if they can’t tell you exactly what they want, their instincts are automatically going to lead them to seek out the most restful spot possible. From there, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a bed that will help them get the most restful sleep possible.

Foods That Are Okay for Dogs During Thanksgiving/November 21, 2017

Thanksgiving is here, and your dog will inevitably be begging to “help” you prepare that big turkey dinner. Most dog owners share food with their furry friends from time to time, and there’s nothing wrong with that – as long as you choose foods that are not only tasty, but good for your dog, too. There are plenty of safe holiday treats your dog can enjoy with you, including:

  • Turkey: You can absolutely share the star of the dinner table with your dog. Turkey is a great lean protein that benefits your dog’s health and makes them super happy, too. It’s best if you stick to white meat and remove any excess fat and skin. Make sure to remove any bones as well.
  • Mashed potatoes: Your dog loves mashed potatoes as much as you do, and they’re good for them, too. Just be aware of any added ingredients and don’t share potatoes that contain butter, sour cream, cheese, onions, or gravy. You could always mash one of the cooked potatoes to share with your dog before adding the extras for the rest of the family.
  • Cranberry sauce: Cranberry sauce won’t harm your dog, and they may love its tart sweetness. Do stick to a small helping, though, since it contains large amounts of sugar – not ideal for dogs (or people, but hey, it’s Thanksgiving).
  • Macaroni and cheese: Unless you know your dog’s stomach doesn’t handle dairy well, this comforting favorite should be fine. If your dog is better off without dairy, you can slip them a little plain macaroni, sans cheese.
  • Green beans: Plain green beans are an excellent addition to your dog’s diet any time of year. In fact, your dog can eat many fresh vegetables, including green beans, carrots, cucumbers, peas, spinach, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin (but at Thanksgiving, watch out for pumpkin pie and other dishes where the pumpkin recipe includes iffy ingredients).

Foods Your Dog Cannot Eat

Along with the foods above, which are safe and healthy for pets, there are also plenty of foods you should avoid feeding them. The following foods are potentially harmful – even lethal – to dogs, so keep them far away from your pooch’s plate.

  • Onions and garlic: Foods that contain alliums, such as onions, garlic, scallions, and leeks, should not be fed to dogs. Large amounts of these foods can lead to toxic anemia.
  • Grapes: Many people don’t realize that grapes (and, by extension, raisins), can be highly toxic to dogs, potentially causing kidney failure.
  • Xylitol: You may be making a healthier choice for most of your family by choosing an artificial sweetener to cut calories, but keep in mind that xylitol is poisonous to pets. Avoid feeding sweeteners that contain it.
  • Chocolate: Most people know that they shouldn’t share chocolate with their dogs. Make sure your dog doesn’t get his paws on any – especially baking chocolate.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol is a hard no for pets. What you may think is a small amount may be enough to make a little dog very sick. Remember to watch out for unexpected places alcohol may lurk during the holidays, such as in fruitcake and unbaked bread dough.

When you’ve all eaten your fill (Fido included), and you’re ready for a nap, make sure your dog has a comfortable place to rest, too, with a custom pet bed from J’adore. Also, if you’re planning to start your holiday shopping this Black Friday, remember that a custom pet bed is a perfect gift for your dog to discover under the tree! All of us at J’adore wish you and your entire family a very happy, healthy, and safe Thanksgiving.

Choosing the Best Custom Pet Bed for Your Big or Little Dog/November 16, 2017

If you have a dog, you’re aware that our furry friends can sleep in some very strange positions and places. If you pay attention, though, you might uncover some clues as to what type of bed your pet prefers based on the way he sleeps. Does your dog tend to sleep in your recliner, or are you more likely to find him on your bed with his head on the pillow? Taking your cue from your dog, you can find the perfect fit for him when it comes to choosing a bed.

Nestling Beds

If you often return home to find your dog asleep on the sofa snuggled up against the back pillows with his head on the arm, or curled up in a cushiony recliner, then he would probably be most comfortable in a nestling bed. These wonderfully comfy beds are pillowy clouds of comfort with higher walls and supportive sides for your pup to rest his head. Check out our Cuddle, Cozy Cuddle, or Throne Pet Bed for a super soft nest your best friend will love.

Lounging Beds

Does your dog love to sleep on your bed, maybe even on his back? If so, a lounging bed may be perfect for him. Loungers make awesomely soft and roomy places for your dog to crash. If you have a pup who loves sprawling on his back, a lounger such as our Rectangle, Square, Round, or Edgy Pet Bed with a Fiberfill insert will give him the room he needs to stretch out with lots of supportive cushioning.

Supportive beds

If your dog comes in after playing outside for a while and flops down on the first soft and cushioned spot he finds, he may need lots of support. Dogs who love more supportive beds tend to sleep on their belly or sides with their legs either sticking out, stretched out straight behind them, or tucked in. These dogs have simple needs; they just need a spot to call their own and a comfortable bed that provides cushioning and support for their tired joints. Our Pillow Pet Bed provides nice soft protection against a hard floor. All you need to do is simply choose the fabric that best complements your existing décor and the size your dog needs.

Picking the Perfect Bed

When it comes to picking out the perfect custom dog bed, we understand how important it is for each customer to be able to find a bed that fits their home, their dog’s needs, and their budget. That’s why we make our pet beds with the highest standards of quality to ensure that they are long-lasting and durable. A good-quality custom dog bed or custom cat bed is an excellent investment when you consider how often you must replace lower-quality discount beds. We offer a range of beds to suit any need – all with the same outstanding quality you expect from J’adore.

Whichever bed you choose, you’re sure to end up with one that you and your dog will love for years to come. Many of our beds are reversible and flippable to offer a new look in seconds. We also make every bed with upholstery-grade materials and pre-washed fabric to prevent shrinking when washed. Use our design tool to create a truly custom pet bed, or choose from our excellent pre-designed line – either way, you’ll love the J’adore difference.

Seven Pet Cancer Symptoms You Need to Know/November 9, 2017

Our canine companions and feline friends deserve the best of care. Daily feeding and proper grooming, and keeping pets active all contribute to a happier and healthier life. It can be fun to pamper your pet with items such as custom pet beds.

However, responsible pet owners should remember that pet care also includes vigilance regarding their pets’ long-term health. Every pet owner should be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of cancer.

It may not be fun to think about, but it’s an unfortunate reality that many pets do develop cancer in their lifetime. According to the American Veterinary Medicine Association, approximately one in four dogs will develop neoplasia – an abnormal growth of cells that may or may not be malignant.

With that in mind and in honor of Pet Cancer Awareness Month this November, here are some things to watch out for to ensure your pets’ health.

#1 – Changes in Pets’ Dietary Habits

Whether your pet is a ravenous beast or a bit of a picky eater, you should always pay attention to their dietary habits. Any change should prompt quick attention, especially if your pet is eating less than normal. On the flip side, there’s no reason to panic if Mimsie or Vincent isn’t as hungry as usual. Many factors, including stress, can curb a pet’s appetite.

#2 – Unexplained Weight Gain or Loss

Small fluctuations in weight are perfectly normal. However, sudden and dramatic weight changes in pets are almost always a cause for concern. Unless you’ve put BoBo on a special diet under your veterinarian’s orders, a change in your pet’s weight – whether it’s a loss or a gain – is cause for concern.

#3 – Any Unexplained Bleeding

The only time bleeding is “normal” is when a female pet is in heat – and we’ll take this opportunity to remind you that spaying and neutering are almost always best for your furry friend. Otherwise, bleeding of any kind is an urgent matter, whether from the nose, mouth, or other areas of the body.

#4 – Wounds That Won’t Heal

Nicks and scrapes are as commonplace with fur-babies as they are with human children. The biggest mistake a pet owner can make is not paying attention to their pets’ injuries, no matter how small. Even after initial treatment, pet owners need to keep an eye on a pet’s injury. If it doesn’t heal, this could be a sign that a pet’s health is in danger.

#5 – Breathing Difficulties

Some pets may naturally have mild breathing difficulties – brachycephalic breeds especially, such as pugs or Persians. However, if breathing difficulties appear out of nowhere or worsen significantly, it is time to visit the vet.

#6 – Persistent Vomiting and/or Diarrhea

The occasional bout of vomiting or diarrhea is normal. Any number of things can bring on these symptoms, and typically this isn’t a reason for concern. However, something is likely wrong if a pet has experienced vomiting or diarrhea, or both, for over three weeks. In addition to cancer, many things can cause these symptoms. Put your pet’s health first and seek help if this is the case.

#7 – Visible Changes Such as Sores or Swelling

It is an unfortunate fact that pet owners often ignore one of the most telling signs of cancer. Any visible change to a pet’s body is usually a sign that something is wrong. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Swelling of the abdomen
  • Bodily sores or lesions
  • Discoloration of the skin
  • Unexplained lameness in a pet’s limb
  • Visible masses or tumors

Though they can tell us a lot with a bark or a purr, our pets can’t always tell us when they don’t feel well. Identifying cancer in your pet early on ensures you can provide quality, potentially life-saving treatment. While we at J’adore know, your pal would love a custom pet bed, nothing will make them feel better than being in the best health possible.

Our Top 4 Favorite Cat Games September 14, 2017

Our Top 4 Favorite Cat Games/September 14, 2017

Cats are known as connoisseurs of comfort. It’s no wonder, considering that according to PetMd they sleep an average of fifteen hours a day, and some cats can sleep up to twenty hours in a twenty-four hour period. Don’t you wish some days you could get that much sleep? We do too!

But even with all that snoozing, they do need some fun play time before they head off to sleep in their comfy bed. Here are a few of our favorite activities to play with your feline friends.

#1 – Go digital with the Cat Fishing mobile app.

We had to see this one to believe it, but trust us – it really works! This incredibly inventive app from Friskies (yes, that cat food maker) puts fish on a screen and the goal is for your cat to tap them with their paw and gain points.

Clearly your cat could care less about their score – but it’s still an incredibly fun time. We’ve seen some cats be incredibly engaged with the app and some only mildly interested. Give it a try and see which works best.

For best use, we recommend laying your mobile device on a flat surface so that your cat can clearly see it.

Click here to learn more and to download the app from the iTunes App Store. The video below shows footage of cats in action!

#2 – A game of fetch.

Most people associate fetch with dogs – but cats love this game too! Take a toy mouse or cat ball and when you have your kitty’s attention – give it a throw. Some kitties can even be trained to bring it back to you, especially when they know that doing so means you’ll throw it again. And just like our canine friends, your cat will let you know when the game is done and it’s time for a cat nap.

#3 – Feathers on a stick.

Cats are just mesmerized by fancy, shiny things – aren’t they? And feathers on a stick certainly do the trick! Twist and turn it, swing it up and down, dramatically plop it on the floor from left to right. It’s endless fun for your cat! For extra bonus points, see if you can get your kitty to do jumps. And of course get someone to take photographic evidence and tag us on Instagram (@adorepetbeds). We love seeing your pets!

#4 – Whose hand is that?!

This may be the oldest game in the cat playbook, but it’s amazing how effective it still is. Put your hand under a blanket on your bed or sofa and move it all around. Your cat will love chasing it, pouncing on it and eventually finding the target. But of course be careful and maybe wear gloves. Cats show no restraint when it comes to this game. The claws are out!

After a wonderful day – or shall we say 30 minutes – of play, it’s easy to understand why cats need so much beauty sleep and instantly head for their cat bed. That’s a lot of hard work!

We’re Celebrating National Dog Day with Dogs in J’adore Custom Pet Beds!/August 24, 2017

At J’adore, we think every day should be National Dog Day (and National Dog Day and Pet Day). But each year one special day is set aside to celebrate our canine friends and that day is August 26. As we were thinking of ways we could celebrate, we thought we’d share some favorite client photos we’ve received over the years.

It was really tough to only pick ten! We’d include them all if we could because we love each and every photo we receive. But that would be a really long blog post!

In no particular order – here we go!

Rugby looks so handsome in his cuddle bed. He’s even looking back so you can catch his good side!

From the matching bow to the matching bed, Astrid is one stylish pup! While we don’t recommend keeping dog beds outdoors for a prolonged period of time, it’s great for a quick visit with your parents while they are eating dinner and enjoying the view.

What an adorable face, Carlo! A bed fit for a King. He’s so handsome!

Does it get much cuter than matching dog beds? We love this look for Charlie and Lily!

Halie looks so comfy in her Throne Bed! We want to join her – don’t you?

Sharing is caring! These three beautiful pups – Kila, Sky and Carley – share their custom dog bed.

Doesn’t London look adorable? Our custom dog beds are perfect for comfy sleeping in crates and can easily be moved if your dog outgrows crate sleeping or is hanging out with you in the living room.

Quigley is an absolute beauty! We also really love where his parents put his custom bed – such a fun and neat location!

STELLA! Such a sweet pup that had plenty of room to grow into her bed. Loving her doughnut toy – can we have a nibble, Stella?

Love how the colors of Tinkerbell’s bed match the colors of her hair. Perfect choices!

If you have a photo of your dog (or cat) in a J’adore bed, we’d love to feature them in our social media or an upcoming blog post! Please email a photo and description, including your pet’s name and any order information, to info@adorepetbeds.com.

Our Favorite Things About Cats/August 8, 2017

International Cat Day is August 8. What better day to share some of our favorite things about felines here at J’adore Custom Pet Beds?

We have quite a long list of what we love about cats, but we’ve put it into a manageable list of nine.

1. They are the purr-fect friend.

We’re so fortunate we get to call so many pets friends, including cats! They are ideal buddies. Whether lounging in our laps, cuddled in our ears at bedtime or taking care of us when we have a cold (and yes, they do that!) – they are the purr-fect friend!

2. Speaking of purr, that purr is divine!

Is there anything better than cuddling up with your cat and hearing that purr? It’s such a soothing sound.

3. They are the definition of relaxation.

Talk about lounge goals! Is there a pet around who loves relaxing, lounging, sleeping, napping and anything else associated with general snoozing than a cat?

According to PetMD, cats sleep an average of fifteen hours a day, and some sleep up to twenty hours per day! So it definitely makes sense why they are masters of relaxation. We’re envious!

4. Their curiosity knows no limits!

We’ve all heard that old saying that “curiosity killed the cat;” thankfully it doesn’t! But it definitely makes sense where it comes from. Cats love to get into everything and explore everything. Whether it’s a box or bag, or climbing on top of the fridge to explore that new sound.

5. They love to play.

Toy mice, feather sticks, squeaky balls – doesn’t matter. Cats LOVE to play. Watch their eyes focus on the prize as they chase after it with joyful abandon. It’s so much fun to watch! And then as soon as they are done, it’s likely time for a quick cat nap. It’s a lot of work to play.

6. They are masters of cleanliness.

This isn’t a bash against their dog counterparts, but it’s pretty great that cats have the self-grooming thing down. Unless you have a breed that requires brushing, there’s really not much you have to do in the grooming department. Cats have it covered. Even better if you can give them their privacy while they spend at least an hour a day self-grooming. Manners, please – manners!

7. They make a house a home.

Any pet does, really. But there’s something about the way cats really inhabit every area of the house. Whether it’s the sun-spilled spot on the floor, or your favorite spot on the sofa, or the dog bed they’ve stolen – they make the house theirs. The other pets may think they run the roost, but we know who really does. The cat.

8. Cats love to sleep.

Did we mention this already? Oh yes, we did. But we can’t help it – we’re still really jealous of the fact that they get to sleep up to 20 hours a day! Ahh, the cat life!

9. They talk to you.

Cats love to talk. Their meows are a constant language to let you know what they are thinking or feeling. You can say their name and have an instant dialogue. Sure, we may not understand exactly what our cats are saying back to us – but we can get a pretty good feel. Things like “it’s dinner time” or “I’m ready for some treats.” Cats talk back to us in ways that some other pets don’t – which make for lively companionship!

5 Human Foods Your Dog Can and Can Not Eat/August 3, 2017

As dog owners, we love to share with our pets. Sharing space (hello sofas!) and even sharing food. But as a pet parent, you likely wonder what human foods are okay to share with your pup and which aren’t.

Here are just a few. For a more complete list, here’s a great one from the Humane Society.

CAN

Some Nuts – Peanuts are okay. A healthier option if they are raw and unsalted. You can also give your dog cashews, but only a few at a time. These are fatty nuts and cause weight gain if too many are consumed.

Cheese – As long as your dog or can’t isn’t lactose intolerant, this is okay. But keep it in small amounts.

Chicken, Salmon and Turkey – All good, as long as it’s cooked. If you’re making some for yourself for dinner, you can definitely share a piece or two with your best friend. They’ll be most appreciative!

Eggs – Also okay, as long as the egg is cooked. Whether it’s a boiled egg or scrambled.

Peanut Butter – This is okay, but keep it limited. These are great for training (put some in a kong toy) or if you need to hide medication in it. But limit use

CAN NOT

Some Nuts – Just say no to pecans, macadamia nuts and walnuts as they are highly toxic to dogs. Also, avoid almonds. While they aren’t toxic to dogs, they can block the esophagus if they aren’t chewed properly. And we know dogs often skip the chewing part of what they view as treats and just go straight to the swallow portion.

Chocolate – This is a big no no for dogs. Whether it’s regular chocolate or dark chocolate, your dog shouldn’t eat even the smallest amount. Chocolate contains a substance called methylxanthines which is incredibly toxic for pups. If your dog does eat chocolate, rush them to your vet for emergency care. They will need immediate treatment. If you suspect your dog may have ingested chocolate but aren’t sure, you can contact the Pet Poison Helpline for assistance first.

Grapes – Definitely not. Grapes – and raisins – are highly toxic for dogs. Do not give them to your pup under any circumstance. Here’s a list of symptoms from PetMD to look out for in case you suspect your dog may have eaten a grape or raisin.

Onions & Garlic – This may seem like an obvious no, but definitely never share anything made with onions with your dog. Same goes for herbs like garlic. For example, if you’re thinking of sharing some left over spaghetti sauce – definite no. Things like onions and garlic are not good for your pup, so skip it. According to the AKC, poisoning from garlic and onions may have delayed symptoms, so if you think your dog may have eaten some, monitor him or her for a few days, not just right after consumption.

Products Made with Xylitol – Xylitol is a sweetner used in many products as a sugar substitute. While it’s okay for humans – it’s incredibly toxic to dogs and the number of pet related deaths as a result has skyrocketed in recent years. Products which use these include sugar-free gum, candies, breath mints, pudding snacks, and children’s chewable or gummy vitamins and supplements. These products are often in easy reach of dogs – specifically sugar-free gum. Please be very aware of keeping these products away from your dog. Learn more about the very quick dangers of Xylitol here.

7 Ways to Keep Your Pup Active This Summer/July 20, 2017

Whether your dog is a pup or a senior, one thing they all need is activity. It helps keep their adventurous spirit intact and when it comes to puppies, it can help decrease their love for destroying things. Who has time to chew, chew, chew when you’re just plum exhausted? All they are thinking about is finding their cozy bed to snuggle up in and catch a few zzz’s!

Here are a few things you can do with your pup active during those long dog days of summer.

But before we do – one thing we can’t stress enough during summer! If you’re playing outdoors with your pup, do it in very limited bursts. And primarily during early morning and late evening. It’s hot and pups can overheat quickly. While it’s important to keep your dog entertained and active, be sure to keep safe too.

1. Go for a walk.

Just like us humans, dogs love getting outdoors and having a change of scenery. Also incredibly exciting for them – all the new scents. Whether it’s a freshly cut lawn or someone grilling down the street or your neighbor’s dog Lucy, everything is new and exciting! Taking a quick walk with your dog is good for them and for you – both for exercise and for bonding time.

Walking Tip: Be sure to keep your pup’s paws off the hot pavement. Try to find areas where they can walk on grass.

2. Let’s play ball.

This is a great game that can be played outdoors – or if your home permits, indoors! One of our favorite pastimes is also that of our pet pooches … ball! Throw a tennis ball and your dog will bring it back time and time again for endless fun.

3. Go to the dog park.

What better way to socialize than a quick trip to the dog park? Say a quick hello to the other dogs, do some quick sniffing of the land, a run here and there. It’s all in a day’s fun!

Dog Park Tip: Be sure your pet is current on all vaccinations before heading to the dog park. Parks handled by cities require this and if you’re not in compliance you will be fined. But more importantly, outside of always staying on top of your rabies vaccinations – staying on top of things like bordetella will prevent your dog from catching kennel cough from other pups in general areas, including dog parks.

4. Frisbee, Frisbee, Frisbee!

Has your dog ever played Frisbee? If not, give it a try. It takes the fun of playing fetch with a ball and ups the game play a level. But be forewarned – there’s something about a Frisbee that some dogs just don’t want to bring them back! Not that we blame them one bit. 🙂

5. Go for a ride in the car.

Does anything get a dog more excited than the jingle of car keys? If you’re running an errand – like a quick trip to the bank – bring your pup with you! They’ll love the time with you and the new scenery.

Dogs in Car Fact: It of course goes without saying to never, ever leave your dogs in the car. Even just a moment to run into the drugstore to pick up a prescription can have devastating consequences. If you won’t be in the car with your dog at all times, just let your pup at home.

6. Play tug of war.

Another fun game you can play indoors where it’s nice and cool! Get on the floor with your dog’s favorite chew toy. If you have a rope toy, even better! The aim of the game is to play tug of war with your pup – you holding on to one end and your dog with a tight grip on the other. See who can win … and who gets exhausted first!

7. Play a game of chase.

A sure-fire way to end the day in happy and exhausted sleep is a game of chase around the house. Playfully chase your dog from room to room – they’ll love it! Some dogs love being the one who is being chased and others enjoy being the chaser. Whichever works best!

At the end of a wonderful, playful day – you’ll have a dog who is ready to conk out in their pet bed and likely dream of all the activities you spent the day doing.

National Pet Fire Safety Day is July 15/July 14, 2017

This Saturday, July 15, marks National Pet Fire Safety Day in the United States. The National Fire Protection Association reports that household pets are responsible for over 1,000 house fires in the US each year and at least 40,000 pets die each year in house fires.

So how you can keep your pets – and your family – safe from fire? Here are a few tips.

If you’re leaving home for more than a few minutes, remove stove knobs. Pets are notorious for touching things they shouldn’t. Once you’re out of sight, their curious side really comes out. This can be incredibly dangerous when it comes to stove knobs. They can touch the knob, turning the stove on, and then walk across a glass-top stove not realizing it’s on. Or worse, if you’ve left an item on the stove – it can immediately start a fire and spread quickly.

Here’s an example of what happened when a Labrador was interested in pizza on a gas stove. Fortunately his owners were home and able to quickly put out the fire.

Don’t leave candles unsupervised. The flicker of a candle can be mesmerizing for pets, especially cats. They will often go to swat at it and once the heat scares them – the candle can become knocked over as they run away.

Don’t leave a space heater unattended. During cold winter months, pets like to be in places where it’s warm (just like us!). It’s incredibly important to not leave one on unattended. A pet can lay next to one and their hair can catch on fire. Or they can knock items in front of the space heater which become enflamed.

Be sure smoke detectors have fresh batteries. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, smoke detectors should be tested at least once a month and batteries should be replaced at least twice a year. Most dectectors have a button you can push to do a manual test. It’s very simple and won’t take more than a few seconds. Check your owner’s manual for instructions. Making sure your batteries are in working order means if there is a fire in your home – you’ll be alerted quickly.

Make a rescue plan. And by “make a plan” – we mean a literal plan. Draw a diagram of you home and know the escape routes. How will you get your dog out of the house? What’s the best way to transport your cat? Or birds? Or other pets? Think all of this through so you’re not having to try to figure this out in the moment. Share it with all family members so they know the plan of action and can take charge if they are closer in proximity to a certain pet at the time the fire breaks out.

Have an emergency kit ready to go. Keep a pet emergency kit in your car should you need to evacuate your home. Keep anything non-perishable (water, box of bones or treats, familiar toys, spare pet bed). Also, be sure to have the name/phone number of your vet stored in your phone as well as the name/number of the local emergency after-hours clinic should you need them.

Hopefully these tips will help get you started as you think about pet fire safety. Our pets are family and their safety is our top priority!

4 Ways to Acclimate Your Pet to Their New Bed/July 6, 2017

Pets are creatures of habit, and sometimes adding a change to that habit can require a bit of work to get them acclimated. It’s no different when adding a new custom dog bed or custom cat bed to their living space. Unlike humans who love new bedding – dogs and cats can sometimes be a little skittish around new sleeping arrangements that don’t look (or smell) like the old ones.

But not to worry – we’ve put together four easy ways to help your dog or cat get comfortable so they are loving their new custom pet bed in no time!

#1 – Put the Pet Bed in Their Favorite Spot

As part of being creatures of habits, dogs, cats and other pets like to have their things exactly where they should be. Whether that’s their favorite toys in a favorite hiding spot in your sofa or their dog or cat bed at that special place in the living room, they like things being where they are expected to be.

When you get your new custom dog bed or custom cat bed, be sure to let your pet see you remove the old bed and place the new one in its place. In its exact place. This will help your pet to understand that this is their new comfortable bed and they’ll be happy to hop on for a few zzz’s.

#2 – Get It Smelling Familiar

In addition to loving the way you smell, our pets also love the way THEY smell. So before you throw away their old bed – rub clean areas of it onto the new bed to transfer the scent. That way they’ll recognize it and know it’s their special sleeping area.

#3 – Add Their Favorite Toy or Blanket

In addition to getting their new bed smelling familiar, add things that they love to help make their bed feel a bit more like home. It can be their favorite chew toy or blanket they love to snuggle under. You may even want to try a blanket that you use. Since it smells like you it may help associate their new pet bed with you and make it a more seamless transition.

#4 – Lay on the Pet Bed with Them

There’s nothing fluffy or fido love more than their pet parents spending a little time cuddling in bed with them before sleep! If your dog or cat is a bit stand offish with their new bed, there’s nothing that will help them fall in love with it more than if you spend a few moments on it with them.

Instead of doing playtime outdoors with your dog or inside with kitty, spend some time near the new custom pet bed and help them get acclimated. As we mention above, you can even bring one of their favorite toys over and play a game of hide and seek in the bed to help make it fun.

Once your dog or cat gets acclimated, they’ll be big fans of their new custom pet bed and it’ll be hard to get them out of it (especially the cats, who love to snooze!).

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to let us know! We’re always here to help – whether it’s placing your order or once your custom pet bed is in your home.

How Custom Pet Beds Compare Against Store Bought Pet Beds | J’adore Custom Pet Beds/April 26, 2017

High Quality Dog Bed, Pet Bedding, Detail, CraftsmanshipFashion-forward thinkers know there’s no real comparison to be made between something bought “off the rack” usually applies to things humans wear, like dresses and pants, the same can be said of pet beds. After all, just as humans aren’t “one size fits all,” neither are dogs and cats. So, for pet owners who want to rest assured that their pet is sleeping in designer comfort, J’adore Pet Beds offers the ultimate in pet furniture. Whether our customers purchase a pre-made bed for their cat or dog or want to design their own, J’adore pet beds offer pets and their owners the best of everything.

  • It’s our options that put J’adore pet beds a paw and a tail above our competition. Big chain pet stores offer perfectly fine products for any dog or cat, but they don’t offer the options that J’adore does. J’adore beds are ideal for pets who want to sit not just on their owner’s laps, but in the lap of luxury. We know our fashionable fabrics and delightful designs are sure to suit anyone with an eye for beauty and comfort, be they human or animal. And J’adore’s beds can be made with or without a removable cushion, an optional bolster, or waterproof inserts, because we know no two dogs, cats, or owners are alike.
  • Shape is another way in which J’adore pet beds consistently take Best in Show. Every pet is different, with his or her own unique personality and needs. Some dogs prefer to curl up in a round bed; some cats like a square or rectangle to lounge across, and vice versa. But truly unique pet beds are so much more than shape. Comfort is what pets truly want.
  • Any pet bed you buy from a big box retailer will have been manufactured to certain design specifications, but J’adore pet beds are designed from the ground up, whether by customers who choose the Design a Bed option, or by us. J’adore offers unique and special shapes, fabrics, and sizes—and even the font we use to embroider your pet’s name, if you want. And because we know our customers love to follow the trends just like their canine and feline companions like to follow their noses, J’adore offers reversible bed covers on many of our styles, for when you or your faithful friend need a change of pace.
  • While just about any bed for a dog or cat will be of fine quality, J’adore’s pet furniture is packed full of the highest quality fiberfill. Rated to last three times longer than most pet bedding, our fiberfill also maintains a downy feel and is extra snuggly. We also put inserts into our beds so that your dog or cat will be supported as they snooze. J’adore pet bed covers are also fully removable and washable. J’adore pet beds are made by hand to your individual specifications. The product you receive will be entirely unique—crafted by us, for you and your unique companion.

Handcrafted in the USA, J’adore pet beds will suit anyone, human or animal.

What Makes a Dog or Cat Bed High Quality?/October 5, 2015

You’ve narrowed your search down to two beds. Both look the same based on pictures and descriptions. One costs less than the other, but they both say they are high quality. Which one do you pick?

Pet beds come in many shapes and sizes, are made with varying degrees of quality. How do you know if the bed you want is truly high quality? At J’adore, we feel it is extremely important that you understand what makes our pet beds high quality both inside and out. We also want to arm you with what to look for when making your next pet bed purchase.

We’ve listed six reasons why our beds are high quality, and what sets our beds apart from the competition:

1. STUFFING, STUFFING, STUFFING!high quality stuffing

This is by far one of the most important aspects of a high quality pet bed. Without quality fiberfill stuffing, the bed is no more than a pretty piece of fabric lacking the necessary support. We use the highest quality fiberfill available on the market; rated to last up to 3x longer than standard fiberfill! It’sseat brick test Brick Test Bolsterconsidered a down alternative, offering great support, so much so that you won’t find this in average or mid-level furniture; only top-tier, designer furniture. Your pet will be sleeping in ultimate luxury.

We don’t skimp on fiberfill either! We stuff each bolster so it’s extra firm to offer head support for your pet. The seat is stuffed so it’s the best of both worlds: supportive and comfortable.

To illustrate how supportive our beds really are we conducted an 8 1/2 pound brick test to prove how our beds won’t cave under the pressure! By passing the test, you will know that our bolsters are firm and will support your pet’s head if they want a special perch and that our seats offer wonderful support.

attentional to detail

2. PATTERN MATCHING AND CENTERING

Nothing clearly illustrates poor, craft quality beds more than those with patterns that don’t match or aren’t centered. We always pattern match and center our beds to make sure the fabrics match up beautifully, including the placement of the embroidery to take your bed from just being a bed to being a piece of art.

3. QUALITY ZIPPERS AND THREAD

Will the bed be made with upholstery grade zippers and superior bonded thread? We use the same zippers and thread as custom upholstery to hold up to tough situations. Our thread is thick and used in commercial machines. Thin thread with very close stitches is commonplace with craft products, is weaker and does not have the same durability as bonded thread.  We also use thread and zippers that coordinate with the colors of the fabrics we are working with for that extra designer touch.

4. PROFESSIONAL SEWING AND SEAMS

Seams can tell you a lot about the quality of a pet bed. Are they crisp, clean and polished with serged edges? Serging prevents the fabric from fraying in the wash. Will the fabrics have wrinkles sewn in? Will the cording/piping come wrinkled or floppy? Crisp, professional sewing will set a high quality bed apart from the others and can to take a bed from being just a bed to being a piece of art.

5. WASHABLE, REMOVABLE COVERS

All of our beds feature removable, washable bed covers are made with 100% cotton fabrics that offer the most color and pattern options. Another important feature is that our fabrics are pre-washed to prevent shrinkage of the cover after going through the wash.

embroidery6. EMBROIDERY
This is one of the extra perks of ordering a custom bed, you get to personalize it with your pet’s name. We use a professional embroidery machine to make absolutely beautiful embroidery. Each letter is knotted off and we use a permanent stabilizer to make the embroidery extra strong. We also have a large selection of embroidery thread available so we can match practically any color.

Scissors to good to be true!/February 2, 2015

scissorsSo from time to time when your out and about you find something that is to good to be true.  This pair of gold scissors happened to be one of them.   What makes it’s even more timely is, it’s just in time for the grand opening of our new J’adore Custom Pet Beds workroom which was officially completed on Thursday.

So a little about the picture.  The black scissors in the picture are our industry grade 10″ sheers which almost look microscopic next to the giant gold scissors.  So can you guess just how big the gold scissors are?

Hint: They weigh 10lbs and are made of solid metal.

They are a whopping 35″ long x 10-1/2″wide and not only that they are sharp!  I could actually cut something with these.

So keep your eye out for the upcoming pictures of our beautiful new workroom, aka “The Creation Station”.  It has that WOW factor which was inspired by the fun and bright fabrics of our beds.

What’s Your Animal Personality?/July 9, 2014

animal personality
The Dog – Social butterflies, supporters…

So I stumbled across a quiz today that I think is a blast to take! It is called “What’s Your Animal Personality Type? They have 16 different animal types and after answering around 60 questions they tell you what animal personality you are.

TAKE TEST

See your animal personality here!

When you are done taking the test make sure to tell us what animal personality you are. So far everyone I know that has taken the test has been pretty much spot on with the animal they are matched to. I happened to be the Beaver, though not pretty did get my workaholic nature spot on 🙂

Enjoy!

Tips to keep your pet safe this Thanksgiving/July 9, 2014

As we all know our pets, especially our dogs, love to eat people food and saying “no” to them can be hard. So here are a few tips to keep your pet safe this season so you can save yourself the worry of having to take your pet to the vet.

thanksgiving-dog-dinner1. Turkey Bones
Even though they seem like a somewhat harmless thing to feed your dog they are not. They can splinter in your pets throat, stomach or even intestines and cause serious complications. Instead try feeding a small piece of turkey that is free of any bone or skin and preferably white meat. This is easier and safer for them to digest and in small portions is just like giving them a special little treat.

2. Chocolate
This is one many of us already know that we should not feed our pets chocolate and would never do intentionally. But, what about your guest or kids who might leave their chocolate on a chair or on the edge of the counter? Some dogs are very tricky and will find a way to get it. I once had a cat who had a thing for chocolate and no matter where I put it he would get into it, until finally I had to hide it away in a jar. So be mindful to keep an eye out that your chocolate is not within reach of your beloved pet.

3. The Door
This is an easy one to forget but a quick way to ruin the holiday. When opening the door and coming in the house we may know that our dog loves to run out from time to time so we keep an eye out. But when our guest come over they may be coming through the door with their hands full and no clue that your dog loves to make a quick escape. So it’s always wise to either lock your dog up temporarily until all the guest arrive or keep a close on them. I don’t know about you but that would ruin my Thanksgiving if my little dog got out the door and even worse got lost or hit by a car. So keep an eye out on that door!

4. The Family
So we may have all eggs in a basket and know what to feed and not to feed our pets, your family or guest may not. They see this big beautiful hungry eyes looking at them begging for food and they just can’t resist giving your pet a little bite to eat. Even worse yet your pet may make there way around the table getting scrap after scrap of things they should not eat. So it is just as important to not only keep an eye on your pet but also your family!

5. The Counter
After the dinner and after everyone has left many times we are left with a mess which is easier to say I’ll mess with later than to conquer right then. But for our four legged friends who can get access to the counter this can be very dangerous and a free for all of foods they shouldn’t be eating. So at the very least, if your tired, get the food rinsed off the plates and put away so you can get rid of that temptation and danger.

6. Holiday Plants
We all love to decorate for the holiday but did you know that Poinsettias, holly berries, mistletoes and cedar Christmas trees were toxic to your dog? Well if you didn’t, now you know. So try to keep these plant away from your pets.

Have a Wonderful & Safe Thanksgiving!

Welcome!/July 9, 2014

It only seems fitting to kick off our first blog post with how J’adore Custom Pet Beds got to where it is today and where it is headed in the future.

The bed that started it all! Miya & her first bed.

The idea of J’adore came to me one day just after I got my dog Miya. I wanted a dog bed that matched my decor on top of being plush and comfortable for her as well. I looked around for a bed but couldn’t find anything I wanted. So I asked myself, “Why couldn’t I make my own dog a bed?” Having worked for a seasoned upholsterer for many years as the head seamstress I knew I could make my own. So I found fabric that I recently used to upholster my chairs with and found some ultra soft fabric for the inside. I then began contemplating how I would want the bed to look and ultimately came up with my cuddle bed. It came out perfect and Miya loved it too!

Then just a few weeks later out of the blue I had a good customer of ours at the upholstery shop ask me to make her a dog bed for her 2 little ones. I thought, well I just made a bed for Miya, so what’s one more? So I made her a cuddle bed that matched some outdoor cushions that we were doing for her. It turned out so cute and she loved it. That’s when the light bulb popped over my head, “Why not start offering custom pet beds?”

But I didn’t want to offer any run-of-the-mill pet bed–I wanted to offer the highest quality pet bed you could find and then let the customer customize it. So starting with my cuddle bed I wanted it to not only be cute but also “flippable” and I wanted the cover to be removable and washable. Well the first bed I created did not offer those things so after a couple mock-ups I came up with my current bed style today that is flippable with 5 concealed zippers so the insert is removable and the cover is washable. I ended up doing this process with every style of bed I offer but also started applying principles I used for making complicated upholstery patterns to make these bed covers practical, washable and beautiful. I also sew every bed with the same material and equipment used on upholstery cushions so these beds are sewn to quality and will hold up.

Our doors officially opened on July 31, 2012 and we have grown leaps and bounds since. We have now made beds for lots of lucky pets all over the USA as well as Canada, Portugal, and Australia which is so exciting and rewarding! I feel like it’s a dream come true that I can make works of art and create a beautiful comfortable bed for everyone’s loved ones.

Please check our blog often for up to date information and Specials!
